Post Door check strap all welded up....

While playing with different ways to reinforce my door check straps, my bodyman beat me to it and welded up and painted my 993 right hand door strap. I thought he did a very good job of hiding the weld...

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/MJDoorStrap001.JPG" alt=" - " />

I am still playing with plates etc. but nothing looks right so far...but I still think even if its welded up the strap needs more metal behind it.

Cheers,

Mike

Looks like a very clean job. I have the same problem on the driver side. If you don't mind sharing, how much did this repair cost?

Bob,

I had a check strap failure on the driver side. Plate welded behind and repainted. It feels very sturdy. Not as pretty as stock but much more ridgid. Cost for such a repair can be around $2000.

I'm getting mine fixed in April for a quoted $750, but have heard others range between $600 and $1200.

Hi Tim,

This was part of a bigger package when I got the nose repainted to get rid of rock chips, but is most likely about $200 CND. Much cheaper than the numbers I have been seeing but then again I know the body shop owner very well.

I can't see why it would be much more if the fix is on the outside..at the most a couple of hours of labor including paint. If it involves taking the fender off and fixing it from behind that could be much more.

Did you take any pictures of what the plate looks like behind? I am curious on where the flanges are that are spot welded. I have seen some other posts with pictures behind but they were not clear.

Cheers,

Mike

Add me to the list of people with this problem. It just started on my driver's door. So, has anyone in the Phoenix area had this taken care of, and where? I have no problem with a visible weld like Mike J has in the 1st picture.

Thanks - John

Its about time Porsche fixed this problem - its been with them since the 911 first appeared. They even produce a "repair strengthening" kit for some models.

I had an 83SC....and the check strap was much stronger than this one. I thought the really weak designs were on the 993 and the 944?

I just had it done at West Coast Specialties in San Diego. Now that it is fixed I sort of miss that big click when I opened the driver door...well not really!

They did a fantastic job, the repair is invisible to the naked eye with a perfect Grand Prix white pait match. The cost was about $600 as I recall.

The replaced the rear fender stone guards at the same time. I was surprised how easy they peeled off, and that the stone guards are color coded to the car's paint. I had been under the impression they were clear 3M material.

I also did a windshield replacement, $1,000, ouch!

Does this problem just happen on its own or is it from swinging the door open without catching it before putting stress on this strap? Whenever I get out of my car I never swing the door open and let the strap catch the door, so to speak. I will stop the movement by holding on to the door pull before the strap takes the brunt of the force.

Good question Randy, I'm wondering the very same thing. I have the dreaded click noise now, and would rather put my money towards a new mod than this fix.

I found the failure was the passenger side first...its inevitable that you will get a passenger that will just fling the door open. My old Chinese martial arts master is like that...being 75 years old and from Beijing, he does not understand why I would want to baby the door!

The drivers side was due to the PO or the guy before him...not sure but I wasn't me!! ;-)

Back in February, we determined that at least the 964's check strap had a full weld.

Why can't we push Porsche into doing a recall on this problem? It seems to be afflicting all cars, and many with very low mileage.

Does anyone know how we could get started pursuing this with Porsche?
