Wink Which 993 ?

I'm looking for either a 996 or 993.

I was convinced I should order the 996, but now I'm not so sure.

It looks like I can get a decent 993 from 97 or 98 for around 50K, is that correct ?

I really like the looks of the 993 C4S, but how reliable is the 4WD system ?

Also, I tall (6'7") and the 993 is cramped, I think I can live with it, but am I misssing something simple (seat options, etc...) to get a little more headroom ?

Thanks,

Roger

Roger,

Welcome to the board.

You can also obtain the widebody look in a C2S, which is a traditional 2WD. In terms of reliability, the AWD is outstanding, but repeated drag style launches are not recommended, since the prodigious AWD grip transmits more stress to the internals (i.e. clutch, differential).

I'm very fond of the AWD on my TT in the real world, but prefer the "feel" of 2WD on the track.

Since I'm a shorty at 5' 10" compared to you, I can't adequately comment on your height/length issue. As I understand it, the seat can be reloacted a bit further back on the rails, but you're pretty damn tall! Even at my height, my hair scrapes the headliner. You might try to find an example without the sunroof, since this might give you another inch or two.

Good luck!

I thought I saw an earlier post where a 996 actually had less headroom that the 993.

FWIW, the factory claims the 993's front headroom to be 37.4" and the 996's is 38". If you want more headroom, get a car without a sunroof and you may gain ± 3/8".

Or you can go for the Targa and gain 2" of headroom. I was tired of banging my helmet on the roof liner of my SC...the 993 Targa is much better! Open the roof and voila...infinite headroom.

Of course you have to allow for a little squeaking now and then!

Cheers,

Mike

Roger:

Anir is correct. You can put the seat back another inch(?) or so. It is a DIY.

I am 6'4" (265lbs) and fit fine. In fact, my seat is not all the way back.

Good luck.

Talking

Thanks for the replies,

Regarding the seat, I actually have short legs for my height so the front to back adjustment isn't typically a problem.

Is there any height difference in the seat options, standard vs, spont (assuming the 993 had such a thing) ?

Was the C2S model very rare ?

I've seen a couple of C4S but no C2S cars.

What I can tell you is that I had headroom problems when wearing a helmet (sunroof '96 coupe), and installing a Recaro SRD on really low-profile sliders did the trick for me. You can go one further and forgo sliders & bolt an aftermarket seat directly to the floor. I think that was DJ, who's, what, 6'4", did this w. success.

Roger,

Robert makes a good point, that I should have mentioned. I have ordered a pair of GT3 seats from Gert, in an attempt to gain more helmet room for DEs. This might work for you, if the seat is wide enough to be comfortable for you.
