Default OBD2 Reader for iPhone - Dreaded Check Engine light!

Is there an iPhone app for bluetooth OBD2 readers like this one?
Amazon Amazon

I used this bluetooth OBD2 reader along w/ the Bimmercode app on the iPhone to shut off the fake engine noise in a BMW.

I am wondering if there is a iPhone app that I can connect this device to in order to see what the diagnostic code is for my check engine light that just came on.

Thanks!

An off-the-shelf OBD reader/scanner (wireless or not) will at best be able to communicate with the Motronic engine management unit in the 964/993. It may be able to read fault codes, or maybe not.
There's only a handful of systems that can connecto to all the OBD-connected things in our cars. (Motronic, ABS, air bag, alarm and climate control)
*The Bosch Porsche "hammer" (KTS 301)or later Bosch Porsche tools as PST2, KTS500 or PIWIS v1 or v2
*Freeware Rennlist Scantool Windows software (serial port adapter as the T-OBD needed)
*Durametric Windows software with a proper (original?) adapter cable
*Jennisken UDT/PDT999 diagnostic tool
Cheers,
Tore

Is that true that only the above tools can read the Porsche specific codes and reset things? I'm aware that a generic tool will only give you the general OBD or OBD-II codes and not the Porsche codes and ability to reset but there are other tools out there with Porsche specific software.

Believe I saw Foxwell has some with Porsche software for ~$150. I seem to recall @Gert 993 using one in his "993 Barnfind" thread to reset some codes.

boomboomthump, I am not sure what you mean. It is true that only the above mentioned tools can do all OBD-connected units in the 993.
Off-the-shelf OBD tools can possibly read out fault codes from the engine control unit, this is the unit that was closest to the generic OBD2 protocol used in modern tools. There may be tools that also allows for reading codes from the SRS airbag and ABS units, but I haven't seen any evidence of this.
Please be aware that we are discussing the 993 here, not tools that supports later Porsche models.
Cheers,
Tore

I went back and looked for the post I was referring to... https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...l#post17112325

Looks like Gert stated he had to select 996 model to reset his airbag warning. Did not recall that. Was thinking that the Foxwell scan tool with Porsche software allowed reading of Porsche specific codes and reset of all functions. Guess not.

Looks like the OP just wants to see what caused his check engine light. A simple OBD2 reader will likely do this.

If you want to access all your options and all modules, then the tools from Tore are perfect.

I use the Veepeak OBD bluetooth scanner (from Amazon) with the Car Scanner Pro app on my iPhone. That combo costs $48 (+/-) and works very well.

A simple OBD2 scanner will report out the basic OBD error codes, ready status (smog check tests), and sometimes real-time data from the ECU. Have you tried your app that came with your dongle? I have been using one from OBDWIZ LX for basics and also has the bonus to link up with Racechrono so I get the ECU data recorded with AX/track days. https://www.scantool.net/obdlink-lxbt/

The other porsche specific scanners are good if you are trying to diagnose and run tests with the ECU and other "brains" in the car like the airbag, abs, climate, and alarm. The durametric is great for these "advanced" capabilities.

If you were local, I would lend you my scanners... I have a few you can try out.

While I have PST2 from ToreB, I have several blue tooth BlueDriver in my cars and is perfect for scanning, saving and clearing all codes.

Default OBD2 reader

Got a Blue Driver OBD2 reader as a gift. You download an app on your phone and the Blue Driver connects to it. It works on my 993 but, as I recall, it doesn't give as much info as the Durametric.

As usual, YMMV.

Hi Sam,
I'm afraid the 993's life is not I-Phone-centric. Here is detailed information on readers for our cars:
