Post Mixing SO-3 rears w/ pilot sport fronts?

My car is going to need 2 new rear tires (fronts are fine), and I'd like to go SO-3's in the back as they are ~$100 less per tire (as well as the gen. consensus they are better). But, I seem to remember talk that that would upset the handling of the car. Are the handling traits of ea. tire noticeably different to adversely affect handling?

I am running 225/40/18 front, and 285/30/18 rear. I have run 34F/40R psi, as wheel enhance ment recomended, but the rears are wearing more in the middle, making me think 40R is too much. In the middle they are just to the wear markers, and on the outsides, they are a comfortable distance from them. I am wondering if they are ok to run one last DE this month before swapping them. In high school, I used to get take offs at the wear markers, and autocross in them until they were flat, and never had trouble. What do you think?

IHHO, and for peace of mind, I would consider having the same tire on the car front and back. Look at your the tires on the next pile of junk you see at a stoplight. Chances are it will have different tires fore and aft, side to side.

You have a $50,000 car, or >. For the car's pride, it deserves the same brand of tires all around the car, don't you think?

I am certain you can sell the Pilots on Renn list classifieds.

Check out Tire Rack, on-line. I just ordered a set of rear SO2s to go with my front SO2s. THe rears lasted 19,000 miles...and the fronts look nearly new after 19,000 miles. And, the tires have about 20 to 30 minutes of track time on them.

You have got to love those SO2...maybe the SO3s are better?

Martin's being too kind. Forget the aesthetics - IMO mixed tire brands/models can be a deadly combination - especially for any 911. More likely than not, some of your car's performance will be compromised. You've autoxd & plan a DE. You already know your tires are the limiting factor for most of what your car does - it's just not an area to skimp. Match all 4.

I don't think there is any problem wearing out the rest of the tread on a dry track for your DE, assuming the safety folks OK it.

Sorry for the rant. I sold high performance tires in grad school & never understood paying for a performance car & then crippling it and/or endangering car & driver w/improper tires.

PS Hey Martin - think it's time for us to shed the Ratings Declined moniker? Don't remember who was 1st, but we seem to be it - wouldn't want to leave you all alone.
