Default 17” vs 18” Wheels

Hi,

I just acquired a 1995 993 C2 Cabriolet. It has 17” after market wheels on it that are kind of beat and that I am not crazy about. I’m thinking of going with Fuchs as a replacement. I can get them in either 17” or 18”. I’m leaning towards the 17” for ride compliance. I’m not planning to track the car, just some spirited road driving. Before I pull the trigger I just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts? Will I notice the extra 1” of width if I go 18”? How much stiffer will the 18’s seem? Is there a noise difference? What would you do?

The other option is to hold off and wait and try to find NB 18” Twists, or else 17” Cup 2 wheels. I was originally thinking of going back to something OEM, but I do really like the Fuchs. The car is Guards Red with a black top. I was going to go for the RSR style (silver spokes).

Thanks in advance to everyone. Just trying to make the best decision before I spend the $$$.

The car drives and rides great on the 17" cup 2's. They are pretty light as well. I love the look of the Fuchs wheels, but to my eye they look better (more period correct) on the 964 than the 993.

I still doubt on certain tracks the 17" are better than the 18", but for road use the 17" are the right choice if you give more importance to the driving pleasure, the 18" are probably better looking, but this is a matter of taste.
I recently bought the 17" for the 996 winter tires, made by BBS, 10 spokes, they are the lightest 17" ever offered by Porsche, lighter even than the Magnesium CUP 1 for the 964 RS.
I am not look addicted, the wheels are the quickest attribute one can change, if I want more fancy sporty look, in half an hour I can put the 18" Sportclassic II, an even sportier one by mounting the 18" OZ alleggerita.
Wheels to me are the car shoes, I would like to have the 18" hollow spokes too, but I doubt I would install them, and also the MK1 Gt3 Wheels were very good looking ones and also the 16" cup style for the 993 winter tires are nice, only I'd need a room only for the wheels.

I'd stick with 17's. I would imagine scuttle shake in a cab would be accentuated with bigger wheels/slimmer tire sidewalls.

It all comes down to the tire specs you purchase - if some argue 17" wheels provide a better over 18's wouldn't it mean that 16" wheels are far more superior than both 17 & 18?

I recently went from 17” Cup2 to 18” hollow spoke TT’s. The 17s definitely offer a bit nicer ride and depending on where you live, might be a better match for some extra pothole protection.

18's offer less sidewall flex. Great for sporty feeling but ride quality does go backwards over 17's. Only you can decide what's more important to you.

The sidewall height of 18's is on the conservative side of things these days. The trend of larger and larger wheel sizes has really squeezed that sidewall area much smaller in some applications. On the other hand 20's have a great amount of sidewall on my truck.

While there are varying opinions and taste I prefer the look of 18's on a 993. The factory turbo twists also look the best with the smooth contours etc.

18" 3 piece OZ on my 993 3.8L and 19" forged FUCHS on my 997.1. Would have gone with 18" Fuchs for the 993 if they were available back then.

I switched out the 17" wheels for 18" Twists followed by 18" Rufs on my 95 993 Cab and have not experienced undue shakes or shimmies! The ride comfort is fine although I didn't drive it with the 17s to directly compare. I did however drive my 986 Boxster on 17s for about 7yrs and now have had 18s on it for the last 7yrs and didn't notice an appreciable loss of comfort.
I prefer the looks and proportions of the 18s and would never switch back on either car but that's just my opinion.

Everything said above.

The Cup 2s are light, relatively cheap and look great on the 993 [to my eyes]. And there are lots of good tire choices still available.

I have 17” cup 2s for autocross and 18” Sport Classic wheels also. I love both on the car and switch twice a year to get a new look. Both ride good and fit nicely into the wheel well. If you go to the 18” make sure you have the added support bracket on your steering rack. I love the Fuchs also. One consideration is the 17” tires are typically less expensive than the 18’s.

I have same car , mine was with 16 and i moved to 17 ( got a supper deal 800$ with new tires on )
however the early 1995 cars can only use 16 or 17. its only the later 1995 to 1998 that can use 18)
look at your vin before buying 18.
good luck

If you install the steering rack bracket you can run 18’s on an early ‘95

this is exactly right. I have a 95 cab with the 18in MY02 wheels - I much prefer the look of 18s on a 993 and think the MY02 really look great but that is certainly personal taste. I did install the steering rack brace many years ago. No problem running 18s and I don't think the ride is too harsh...

I have 17"'s on mine, they came off a 2002 996 and couldn't be happier. I went for ride comfort and run the 17"'s at 35psi all round. The 16"'s I had had 40psi making the ride quite firm. !8"'s will give a harsher ride due to the shallow sidewall. Like someone already said, if you're tracking your car go for 18"'s, if you want comfort go for 17".
