Considering TPC Supercharger on 993
I really want to have the new TPC supercharger installed on my 1996 993. The car has 61,000 (truly highway) miles and the mechanic says that it is as tight and sound as any he has seen.
He also made the following comments:
1)The 993 engine is a much better candidate than the 996 engine, due to it being able to handle more stress.
2)With a stock compression ratio of 11.1 (I think), adding even 4.5 lb of boost will lead to a pretty hefty pressure.
3)The "factory" cost of a new engine (not that I would buy from the factory) is Fifty grand!
So now I need some advice please. Anyone made the transition from a 993 to a 996?
Do you like the 996 as well? Many say it's too refined and you lose that "grunt". Anyone used the kit on a 993? Could I change the pulley size and lower the 4.5lb down to something a little more safe?
I can't decide whether or not to supercharge my 993 or just buy a 2002 996. Any advice is appreciated.

Whoever told you that at a new factory 993 engine is 50K + is just on crack (or a similar substance). It's still not cheap, but I beleive the special werks dept. can build you one for around $18K US.

No, he's not on crack. He is actually a very sought after Porsche mechanic. He was reffering to a brand new, ready to install motor from the factory. We joked about the fact that I could buy a new (1996) car for that amount.
Give me the low-down; If I blow the motor, how much do you think it would cost me to rebuild it?

$15k all in with 3.8 kit
Cecil in Florida has the supercharger on his 97 and as I have been in it twice (once for 200 mile round trip) I can vouch for the bang for the buck character. It is fast as ****.

There was a story about TPC supercharged 1995 993 on september 2001 Excellence magazine, check that out.
Sounded like a really good deal $6000 + $1000 (for labor) and at least when I was reading it, I got the idea that it really was good! If I'd had the extra $7000, I'd do it right away!

I took a ride with Cecil in his car also and it was very quick. Replacing and rebuilding a motor are two very different things. To replace with a new motor I have no idea but I would guess you could by a used 993engine for $7-$8K.

Hi Philip,
I was very interested in this kit when I first heard about it. The pivotal factor in my case was that it is not smog certified in Calif., and TPC was not going to spend the $100K required to have it certified. Otherwise, the kit looked great for light street use.
If you decide to go for it, be prepared to spend a little more on installation than what you've heard. The $1K-1.5K that is quoted will get the kit installed and running, but if you care about the little things, then more time and $$$ will be required to clean it up.
If you get serious, email me and I will send you some pictures and other tidbits I have picked up along the way.
Cheers,
Dave
