Default Windshield Protection

Recently had my 1995 C2 windshield replaced, and some nominal rust addressed. Shortly afterwards, caught a small stone chip that will be repaired next week. Looking for film protection. I have heard good things about Clearplex, a Madico Co. product but can't seem to find an installer in central NJ. Their website is inaccurate in terms of installers, shops don't call back, etc. Anyone have Clearplex installed recently in central NJ or another option? Thx.

Any film installer should be able to do this easily - mine did. Mine had not done it before so I bought the Clearplex and absolved him on any screw up when installing. It was very straightforward to install as it is not a complicated curve like a fender or bumper. Find a good local film guy and talk to them.

I am sold on this product as an alternative to the sandblasting and ws replacement cycle on the 993's. Definitely get it done.

sorry, not familiar with this product as an alternative to a new WS? Does this stuff help old pitted ws's?

Here is a kit to clean up pitted windshields. Lots of how-to videos on youtube.

I might see polishing out a scratch, but a whole windshield is another story.

ClearPlex is an optically clear ws protection film to absorb road debris and stone impacts. It does nothing to correct underlying ws imperfections.

They have a decent website and I’m sure you could call them about fitment for the 993.

I assisted in the installation on my car - well I handed them stuff anyway - the film is quite heavy and goes on just like paint protection film. Soapy water, alcohol the edges, squeegeeing, the usual drill. Trimming was easy just stay inboard of the rubber trim around the ws.

Its already saved my ws from dings and if it ever gets beat up I’ll peel it off and do it again. Think of it as body armor for the ws.

As far as polishing out a sandblasted ws (my car was a garage queen when I bought it and it was sandblasted at 16,000 miles) you’d make yourself crazy doing it and probably distort the hell out of the ws.

Go new OEM glass and ClearPlex. Problem solved.

windshield film $300-500...still gets sandblasted/glitter into sun if you have a driver/highway and imo happens faster than glass
better for non driver as some protection for chips/black swans
new windshield $1k-1300...better optical clarity
rather just replace windshield...but to each his own

makes sense and I didn't think it would work on an old ws but your wording of "alternative to" made me curious.

Thanks all, especially Mike. I reached out to a couple of shops that do window tinting but they had no interest in applying Clearplex. I did have the front end of my car protected with Xpel film a few years back and was very happy with the installer. I will give him a call

Yes that was my experience a few years ago. I had to romance my Xpel guy. You might want to call ClearPlex and ask them for an installer near you too. It’s really a straightforward job.

I had Exoshield installed on the windshield of my 997. I took it off after one year. The problem with it was that it developed streaks from the windshield wipers which defeated the idea of a permanently clear windshield. Admittedly I used it all winter and it just looked dreadful come spring. The winter salt and slush pretty much ruined it.

Polishing windshields is usually not a great idea and can apparently lead to distortion.

I've always been interested in a clear film for the windscreen, but my local guy isn't comfortable with it, similar to Mike's tech.

I agree with msw. Also, I've had the windshield 3m tinted on a car (very light, not even noticeable) for UV protection and I would get a headache from the mild distortion.
