Default Replacing door handle gaskets...small speed bump?

My door handle gaskets are cracked and work (worse on the driver side). Pretty straight forward DIY even for a guy like me. Got down to the bones and then ran into this rusty handle screw inside the door. What do you guys think? Anyone run into this (I’m sure). Going to try the basic stuff to loosen the nut but I don’t want to get in over my head...just a gasket and mostly a cosmetic thing. Better to back out now I figure than be drilling the door handle out or going to a body shop...

Looked similar to mine when I did this a few years back. Had no issues removing the nuts. Just went slow and cleaned up everything upon removal as mine was only surface corrosion. Ended up replacing the nuts with stainless ones though and I recall the hardest thing for me was removing and putting back that plastic cover.

You’re totally fine. It’s not on that tight and it should pop right off. Here was mine

Shouldn't be a problem.

Little shot of PB and it'll come right off. They're not on there tight.

Use WD 40, let it soak a few minutes and just turn slowly.......

I'm doing this 'project' this weekend. There are a few DIY videos on youtube to assist.

Kano Kroil is an excellent penetrant. However, supposedly, a 50/50 mixture of ATF fluid and acetone has superior properties. https://dorkiphus.net/porsche/showth...ght=kano+kroil

If using a hand ratchet doesn't loosen that nut, I would invest in a small impact wrench. A fairly inexpensive tool that I use far more than I imagined.

Update: You all were correct. The nuts came right off with a little PB. No problem at all. I used an #8 metric angle wrench to get to the little bugger in the back. Prob didn't even need to remove the black plastic cover piece that was such a pia to get back in place. Fishhoop...not bad at all...and if you drop the nut when putting things back tg no worries you can fish it out with your hand and there's a drain it'll fall right through at the bottom of the door....

High recommend using rubbing compound and some wax before reinstalling. There's alot of dirt that gets trapped behind the door gaskets.

Just finished installing gaskets on both door handles. For future doers; It was pretty straight forward - the biggest PITA was the 2nd nut, deeper in the door panel. I found if you hold the door handle engaged it gives you a little more space to fit your 8mil ratchet in there.

I replaced mine last weekend 3/27/21 instead of the 8mm wrench i used a 1/4 in 8mm socket with same ratchet on the inside nut helped a lot. WD40 also.

Going to replace my door handle gaskets, some questions for the brain trust…

-parts 993-537-621-00 and 993-537-631-00 (rear and front handle gaskets) are essentially ambidextrous, correct? Some parts sites seem to list them as only “left”, but I’m guessing they work on both sides.

-anything else I should do while I’m in there? My door hinges (straps?) are surprisingly fine, and the doors hold without swinging open in the breeze. Any other crumbling 25 year old plastic bits? Easily lost or rusted nuts and bolts? One of my black plastic speaker covers (hi fi package) is cracked, but the speaker itself works fine… worth replacing? Wasn’t planning on replacing/upgrading actual speakers.

-the DIY vid above shows him peeling back the interior door film… what does everyone do with it after? Re-glue it to the frame?

you certainly want to reuse the vapor barrier; as i recall the black sticky stuff stayed on the plastic. the best thing i did was remove all of the old sound deadening material inside the door panel and replaced it with a more modern sound proofing (can't remember the name of the stuff but it has done the job). Not an easy or clean job, but i liked cleaning up the inside of the door.
