As long as we're on the topic of Northern Virginia shops, I take my car to Intersport in Tysons . They do great work and the customer service is impeccable.

I have all my service done at Pioneer Centers in San Diego. Been very pleased with their quality and professionalism. Rates aren't that bad either.

Stay away from most dealers. A friend had his Boxster at the only dealer in Ky for some warranty work and he went on and had them do a basic oil service (against my advice) and the bill was over $200.
I use the same guy Ray does for most stuff, but if it gets above my head I take it to my mechanic in Cincy. He is factory trained, very reasonable and he will let me watch help and learn.

Interesting topic, I had this debate with myself ,
I went with the independents at the last service.
What about warranty issues? eg corrosion warranty 10 years.
In the UK if you haven't got all the dealer stamps at the right intervals , including paint inspections , airbag etc. they won't honour the warranty.
What is the norm in the US?
Is their customer service any better?

Tito-
My impression of the warranty process in the US is less "precise" than you describe in the UK. My sense is, unless you are flagrantly abusing the service issue (never had your oil/filter changed), you will get coverage. However, I think your individual dealer has alot of the interpretation in how they deal with warranty claims. Certainly, I have never worried about paint inspections!-but I also have never tried to press a claim in this area.

[quote]When I request I can watch while my car is being worked on and my mechanic(ASG in NoVa)also supports a racing team and preps p-cars for track events so that's an extra plus.

We have one shop here in Pittsburgh area (C & G) where if you are one of their "Favored" clientele (i.e, you get to know them), you can watch your car being worked on.

There is another independent mechanic where if you want he will come out to your garage and do the work in front of you. Believe you can negotiate different rates depending upon whether you're just a spectator or also an active participant. Name is Andy Bittenbinder; some of his cars have been featured in "European Car".

Hi Laurence,
I think that things are more customer directed in the US. The dealers in the UK are not so focused in their attitutes to the customer. I get the feeling that the Brand is king as opposed to the people that buy the cars. What do the other UK members think?

Tito,

I can't compare to the US as I have never been to any car shop there, but I get the impression they expect more for their money. Here in the UK its like, 'you need to spend £5k and another £20 if you want the car washed as well'.

On a separate note, where did you take your car for the rust issue? I have a few minor bubbles and would like to try getting them sorted, obviously no point in going to where you went. As you know my story is similar to yours (German car, no paint inspections, lhd).

PS: I hadn't noticed before, but must have signed into Rennlist just a few hours after me. Look at our user numbers!

Ray,

My Dad who owns numerous 356's ( and lives in PIttsburgh) said Andy is the best. Has nothing but good things to say about him. I hear he has a pretty hot 911 too.

Seen it several times. Way he treats it it's just for looks; never takes it on a track. He used to show it at our concours events in the "Track" class; we finally stopped that and made a rule that to compete in "Track" class, you have to take the car on the track.

Picture taken at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. This is the only Vintage Car race held on public streets; run through aa local park wkith actual hay bales used for barriers. Fantastic week long event (July 13-21) - and all for charity! For info, Porsche is Marque of the Year this year. We are trying to get PCNA to support us big time with personnel and cars. Will pass on info when things firm up. For now, can go to

http://www.pca.org/all for our Allegheny Region web site for some info

http://www.pvgpa.org for official site of the PVGP

Hi Riccardo,
Sorry I didn't reply earlier as I was out of action for most of the Easter break.

Yes , our numbers are very similar. I wounder who 001 is ?

The spots - I have left them be they do not seem to have changed since I noticed them. HR Owen did not think that they would progress or did not even seem sure that they were rust. They are little white pin head dots along the front wheel arch closest to the door. Next time we meet I will point them out. I am keeping an eagle eye on them and if they progress I will have to take action. The other area behind the A pillar has not progressed either and I am observing it.

I will go to Porsche to sort it out if I have to -peace of mind etc, despite their poor customer care their paint work seems up to scratch - pardon the pun. Regards the warrantly they just never got back to me I - either an 'no' or they just could not be bothered , either way they did not make any effort to contact me.
This was infact one of the reasons I went to an independent, after the best part of £5k on servicing HR Owen could not make the effort to chase up this matter with Porsche UK - I have to take their word that they even filed it.

Tito.
