Default Help me identify my suspension ... and remove gunk

Thanks to those who helped me identify my exhaust (RSRs).

I'm buying KW V3s for my C4S, and it occurred to me to look at what I have. According to the picture, obviously, I can see they're Bilsteins. Are these stock fare on a C4S? Assume it's 15 years old -- are these PSS9s or 10s?

Bonus points: the flash really shows how cruddy some of the parts look. Short of dry ice blasting, do you all have a secret to making those shine new again? I've bought all sorts of engine cleaners and hard bristle brushes for my drill, but I may be out of my league.

Thanks all,

BG

Hey buddy, not sure on the suspension but I've been watching a bunch of videos online on cleaning the wheel wells.
The dry ice blasting (detailing / cleaning, not re-surfacing) looks awesome / satisfying. I am super keen on trying this providing I can find someone who has done our car before without damaging everything.
It seems like APC or degreaser plus a steam will get a decent result. I was going to give water, chemicals, agitation a go but can't comment as I have not done it yet.

Turbo S 993 (best alternate example)

Newish Audi (not really a direct comparison)

Looks like the same Bilstein HDs I have on my 4S. As for cleaning, I've spent many hours using a combination of Xenit, Simple Green (purple), water, brushes and plenty of rags cleaning the underside. Would have loved to do dry ice cleaning but haven't found a good place near me. I know there are many others here who've done way better jobs than mine, but I'm happy with the results and found cleaning somewhat therapeutic during the winter when it's up on jackstands and a nice change of pace vs sitting in front of the laptop all day.

Hi Bobby,
Just an FYI, you can probably get your present struts rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of new. If they need replacing at all. Do you see any fluid leaking from them?

This looks great. Did you use any wheel / iron off type cleaner also, or consider it?

If I can get a similar outcome I will be happy.

That dry Ice looks cool but wondering 2 things: Why didn't he do the engine cases and does it hurt any rubber or bushings?

When I did my last 993, I started with steam cleaning but got better results from good ole hand brushing with various degreasers like Purple power, Xenit, etc. For the rusty and heavy junk on non painted stuff, I used a small wire wheel on my cordless gun. Having a lift helps.

Great outcome! Thats motivating. Damn I need a lift.

On the dry ice blasting topic and rubber, I found this to be a good demonstration / explanation of its impact to rubber.

I have seen many a video of people blasting the engine case, so no issue there.

I think the issues are damage caused by a shop with low experience, cost being too high. There seems to be ice blasting for re-surfacing and for detailing, so you want to make sure you aren't going to the wrong place. Im still investigating. I think doing it myself might be more rewarding however so might start with wheels off in the garage and chemicals / hard work.

Wonder if the dry ice would work on the carpet glue on the interior?
