I am replacing the rubber shifter boot and need to remove the console...anybody have a link on DYI? (before flame, I know this is simple but would like to know any do's and dont's that show up in a DIY)
Thanks!!
No need to remove the center console. Just remove your shift boot. You can undo the four bolts on the plate that hold the rubber shift bellows down.
To remove your shift boot, push straight down on the left side of the boot to release it (there are two clips that hold it in place). Then slide the right side towards the shift arm to remove it from the recess on the right side (there's no clips on that side, just a slot it sits in). Then angle the base to get it out of the hole. Loosen the Allen set screw which holds the shift **** to the shifter (under neat the boot).
From there you'll see the four small bolts that hold the rubber bellows down.

Yes, the URL I posted above pictures this.
Andy ;-)
and needed to take the console out as well as the tunnel and shift linkages under the car.
Having done the shifter and Goldenrod already so many years ago, it was nice to re-visit the job and see how well the Fister linkages and G Rod held up.
No affiliation but half my car is now breathed upon by his well-engineered products from exhaust to shifter and a few other cosmetics. Great guy to work with.
Thanks for the links guys! Trim work is tedious and takes patience.
I second the Darin Fister comments! He even sent my son and I a couple t-shirts when I ran into SS Kit/Goldenrod install complications last month…
This post, as titled, is a request for help on the upper/forward console removal. Searched a couple hours. Reference to procedure, but nothing specific that I could find. Need to remove this portion to do footwell LED lighting with OE parts and ABS plastic knock-outs already there.
Anyone have specifics with cautions on what not to break? Others have eluded to it. Need to add light to Black on Black ‘96 C4 Coupe….
Thx,
LR

The switch housings pull straight out. The 2 side panels are held on by maybe 2 screws each? It's pretty easy to see if you get in there. Most difficult part of the console removal is disconnecting all the switches and fishing them through the holes in the console. Not bad at all to remove that whole assembly.
Oh, and nice FJ40.

Thanks very much. I guess I didn’t dig in far enough I had everything out to put the fister short shift and golden rod in. So the two panels you were referring to are the upper console? I got those 2ea screws out but then I didn’t want to force it from there. Is there any other trick or just lift out?
Have had the plastic face, switches off already, but need to get to back-side of carpeted areas. Blue line indicates where the existing ABS plastic knock-outs are to install OEM courtesy lights, which I have in hand.
Thx,
LR
Gotcha. You're going to want to remove the whole console for that. So, separate the shift boot ring by pushing down on it. Remove screws in storage cubby behind hand brake. Unscrew frame from tunnel. Remove hand brake tray and screws under it. Remove entire console in 1 piece. Then take those side panels off. There are 2 screws per side if I remember correctly and it'll come out from the side facing you. Shouldn't take more than 15 mins to remove.
