Default OEM Battery Alternative??

Good evening,

Is there a consensus regarding possible problems associated by using a non Porsche battery. Almost fell over today when the dealer quoted US$190.00 for the battery alone (no install) so was wondering if there is a kosher alternative? Vehicle is a ’96 993.

Many thanks,

J

Conventional battery: Interstate, Sears, Autozone
Sealed battery: Optima Red Top 75/35

After 4 good years from my Interstate, I've moved to the Optima.

I also replaced an Interstate battery with the Optima Red Top 75/35.

I also reopaced my factory battery with the Optima Red. It bolted right in, but i had to bend the big positive connection (from the car, not the battery)a little to get it to fit.

Jordan,

The Sears Diehard is a good option. Perfect fit. I think about $120.00.

Ditto, the Optima Red Top 75/35. I also bought mine for about $100 at Costco.

When you get your Optima battery, be sure to protect it and your car forever.

If you do track time with your car, I suggest a gel battery. Will not spill.

I had very good fortune with the Sears International in my 944 and will probably be replacing mine this Spring. I have also read that the Porsche battery isn't all that good. At least a couple of disgruntled buyers in letters to the editor sections.

I used the sears 48 with no problems. I also use a battery mat that helps if there is any acid gases that seep. That said I may try the Optima next as I do store my car for winter, but need to check the battery weekly.

Anyone here with Optima use the trickle charger ? If so any different to use than traditional acid batteries ?

Mye OEM battery died about 3 weeks ago. Porsche in Norway does not recommend OEM batteries - can't cope with winter conditions. Tried to source the Optima Red Top but could not find a supplier. Chose a Soennak Exide Millenium 3 STS. Got it yesterday so I don't know how it will perform over time. At least the car starts without problems.

Seems as if the Optima Red is the way to go. On-line free shipping for less than US$100.
Thanks to all that contributed.
