Lightbulb Decent ICE (Sound System) for the 993

Well after the excitment of getting a 911 I wanted some decent sounds in it, I know I know the exhaust note is glory in itself especially with the Rook system from JZ Machtech.

But anyhow I wanted to play some music of HiFi quality - Has anyone noticed how hard this is to do in a 911?

Well first up was to change the original head unit in my 95 model 993 - it still had the original unit and was something from the ark!!

I popped into my local place, Thames Car Audio in Egham(absolutely bloody fantastic place) and picked up a Kenwood which had a rotating design (Ultra stealth when its off the black design merges into the dash)and also plays MP3s and WMA files - great idea and I can fit 15 albums on one CD, at this time I also fitted the matching Autochanger.

I picked it up and was hugely dissapointed - not tinny but certainly lacky a certain fullness soundwise and missing a lot of detail from tracks compared to my home system. Very dissapoiting after £600+

Next up then was changing the speakers, a straight swap out for the back shelf and front door speakers made it sound much better, no lack of detail in tracks and fairly good mid and high end sound.

Seriously lacking in Bass though and more than that a certain fullness and 'oompth' to the sound, I was still disappointed.

Back to the shop.........

After some discussion we thought the best route forward was a nice Kenwood 5 way Amp which I can control and tweak from the head unit and a sub......

There was my problem where the hell do you fit a sub in a 911!

Thames Car Audio were superb......No problem they said we havent done it before but lets get a pair of 8 inch subs in the back

Great I though but how?

Well no one actually uses the back seats do they (Well other than storage! or Baby seats)? A few hours later and a pair of newly constructed sub boxes sat snugly in the rear footwells.

Added the subs, wired the amp up and voila fantastic sound in my 911.

They have ordered some color coded carpet to cover them in (grey plastic currently) and when thats done should be perfect.

Even without its very much a stealth installation you cant see them unless you fold the front seats down and even then it looks good. Admitly you lose the rear leg room, but does anyone use it?

And the sound, 'oh ye baby as Austin P would say' with the amp and the subs - its fantastic full rich detailed play back of all my tracks, From high volume to low its all there, its not quite home HiFi standard but it really really isnt far off, and it has enough oompth for me to drive along with the windows and sunroof open in the glorious!? British sunshine and still enjoy fantastic xrisp rich sounds.

If anyones interested I can post some pics of the installation - I am also coming along to the next drinky in Egham in 2 weeks, so your welcome to have a look or listen then to!

On another note thank you all for the fantastic advice you give each other I lurked for ages before getting my first 911!

I have fabspeed supercups, sound is great!

RSR is other good brand, they're supposed to sound good too. Both of these are easy to install & you are not gonna get better sound with any kind of stereos!

Sorry, I just couldn't resist!

Atually some of us DO use the rear-seats...my kids fit in there perfectly. So my problem is getting bass without using the rear-seats for a speaker base or the rear foot wells. How to I do that? What I need is a small subwoofer that can fit under the seats or dash...anyone know of one like that?

Mike,
Many would tell you that there is no substitute for a sub(s) and for the most part it's true. The problem is that there are so few subs that have an adequately shallow mounting depth to allow them to be mounted underneath a seat. If you do put it there, you may end up with some moderate to significant issues due to having the sub really close to the back wall of an enclosure. It may be worth considering a free air sub. There are a couple of formed products by folks like Kenwood but I don't think they will do an adequate job.
After much pursuit, I abandonded the sub idea due to the inherent compromises. What I did is put in a quality component system in the front, a DynAudio System 340, that went in without any cutting. I put in an AD 4" coax in the rear and the system is bi-amped by a pair of Helix HXA400 amps (they're conservatively rated at 200 watts each). If you're willing to do a bit of cutting you could fit in a Dyn System 360.
I'm not saying that DynAudio's are the only choice - you want to use drivers that truly deliver the lows that they claim - there are many others I'm sure.
I spent a bunch of time applying Dynamat to the doors and sealing every nook & cranny - it's amazing what that will do for bass. Then prepare to spend quite a bit of time 'tuning' - playing with stage placement, tweaking gains, filters, etc... I think you'll find that you can put in a pretty good system without a sub if that's the route you pursue.
Best of luck to you.
Rick.

I have just fitted 6.5 inch speakers in the front doors and new treble speakers as well. Now I am about to fit the same in the rear parcelshelf. This however requires some surgery to be made to the rear parcel shelf... Initially I was told that 6.5 inch speakers would not fit in the front but I can tell you that yes they do. I used a custom brand called MDS who win most hifi competitions here in Sweden at least. The difference is truely amazing when compared to Porsches Nokia speakers. Now my problem is removing the head unit, a CR-21, which I have been looking to replace with a CDR-21 but since I haven't found one I am about to buy a Kenwood headunit instead. I have also hooked up some filters to the speakers

I have a set of "base shakers" mounted under the seats of my '91 C2 cab. They're made by a company named Aura, which I believe is affiliated with Alpine (all of the documentation is at home). They're not speakers-- they produce vibration only, no sound. Combined with Boston Accoustics Pro 6.5's in the doors and Infinity Kappa 4" squares in the rear side panels, it's a great package. I have a four channel amp -- two channels power the fronts, two channels power the base shakers and the head unit's internal amp powers the rears. Good luck!

Mike, Rick: You might like to take a look at the Panasonic EAB-12132J subwoofer, fits very neatly behind the driver's seat, virtually invisible if you put a piece of black felt over it, easy to install especially if your head unit has an ISO connector, fairly cheap at around £150 fitted and easily removed and refitted (1 connector) if you need the rear footwell space. Does a good job of filling in the low end, at least around town etc. In "spirited" driving or at high speeds it can't compete with the flat 6 orchestra, of course

Stuart

I would be very interested to see pictures of your subwoofer install...do you think you can post a couple of piccys?

Can you also tell us how much the subwoofers and enclosure cost?...I'm thinking of adding a subwoofer but the cost would have to be reasonable to justify it , as like most people I'm usually quite happy to listen the exhaust note.

BTW, what make of subwoofer did Thames Car Audio eventually fit into the enclosure?

Cheers

Ill take some piccies when I get home and post them (still waiting for the color coded carpet to go on).

The subs are 8 inch Kenwood ones( whole system is Kenwood other than front door components which are infinity).

I believe the subs were £80 or £90 list each and it took them 2 hours to build the enclosures at £35 per hour so all in it was about £250 (exact price is difficult as I bought so much and didnt pay attention).

I guess you could halve this if you only had a sub in one rear footwell - they did suggest putting a 10 inch in one footwell, but I preferred the symetry of two.

Cheers

Stuart
