Was adjusting the oil level in my 993 -- oil was purportedly changed in MAY 20, less than 500 miles ago -- unknown type used.
It is green in color.
I seem to recall that there was a Castrol oil that was green.
Anyone know if this color is typical for a certain brand and motor weight?
Thanks.

Brad Penn is green if I recall correctly.
On the Castrol front, the VAG 508 00 spec is green that’s used in the S4.

If you're near Denver, I've got some Brad penn I'll give you for free. I had left over when before I switched.

For decades, Kendall GT1 used to be "The Green Oil" and the "go to" oil for engine builders, racers, track junkies, etc. but they stopped production of this particular blend. Brad Penn took it over 10 or 15 years ago and gave us the ZDDP we craved. Name changed to PennGrade1 recently when D/A bought them.

As usual, GREAT INFORMATION. Thanks to all.
So, I have Brad Penn, PennGrade1/Kendall (of old), Castrol new stuff, and Liqui-Moly.
I guess there's no way to exactly tell which oil it might be - doubt if an oil analysis would be able to tell, right? It would require the analyzers knowing the composition of each oil, and I'm sceptical about that...

If your oil is one of the standard types any brand of oil can be mixed with it with the same API specifications. Even if it is not the exact same viscosity is not really material as the system holds about 12 quarts of oil and the entire range on the dipstick is less than a quart.
It is really easy to overfill a 993 with oil. It should never be filled past 1/3 from the bottom on the dipstick measuring range. Measured with a fully warmed engine, say after a 20 min drive in warm weather, on level ground with the engine running.
Topping it off to the full line is an overfill, so is measuring the fill with the engine off or with the engine not fully warmed. The excess oil will potentially have negative consequences.
The filling procedure I use is on this page:
https://993servicerepair.blogspot.co...nsumption.html
Then again you probably knew most of the above.
Hope this helps,
Andy

the green castrol was German 0w-30, which albeit thick for a 30wt is not something that most people would run in their 993. Id guess you have brad penn/penngrade.
