Noisy 993 rear spoiler on retraction
When my 993's rear spoiler retracts it makes a creaking/juddering noise - it makes a lot less noise when it extends. The noise seems to come from the point where the top of the folding plastic curtain joins the solid plastic plate on the underside of the spoiler element, with the curtain doing the creaking. I've tried to get some lubricant in the curtain/spoiler attachment groove, but access is very difficult and what lube I've got in doesn't seem to have lessened the noise. Any ideas? Do I need to dissassemble the whole spoiler assembly to slide the curtain out, lube it and replace? Thanks.

Thanks chaps. Yes, 'coffee grinder' is a good description. I did a search to no avail before making my original post, but have now tried some other keywords and found the relevant strings - Doh!

I used a garage door lubricant at the pivot points and the movement is smoother.
I hope it does not accumulate too much dirt.
PS. Not recognizing all the noises from the engine compartment, I thougt that the noise was from the driver side timing chain because I heard it only when I was slowing down. :-(

The issue is typically the wing's transmission bearing which needs to be replaced.

Here is one of the best write ups for the repair. I followed ir and it is so good you should buy the bearing from Bergvill.

Mine was making a similar noise. I replaced my motor and discovered that it was actually the plastic collapsible panel. You can purchase a new one from Pelican and I’m sure other vendors. RRC

Sometimes the motor that spins the cable to raise/lower spoiler will get noisy.
Disconnect the cable from spoiler transmission to motor and then hit the button to raise the spoiler in the center console.
if there is still a noise, then motor might need to be changed. If the noise is gone then it’s the transmission, usually the bearing. In that case follow previously posted DIY link.

Thank you for the link.

Did you pay that? I bought a new bearing for the spoiler transmission and installed it in one hour, the bearing was like $6.

Thank you.
Good idea to trace to a problem and prevent replacing or breaking perfectly working parts!

I had a similar issue where my spoiler only made noise on retraction. I did the bearing fix for the transmission and found a very rusty bearing. After lubricating and gluing the transmission back together, I still had a noise on retraction. It's better than before (can no longer hear it over the engine), but it still exists. I suspect it might be the plastic apron as well, but given I can't hear it over my Fister IIIs, it has fallen down my priority list.
Let me know what you find.
