I was cleaning the cabin filters and I could see some pooled oil way down on the front underside cover. It appears that the steering rack has been leaking. Haven't taken the cover off for an inspection yet but I'm thinking that the rack is leaking......a known issue. If I have to r & r it for examination/replacement, can anybody offer some caveats to the job? Any hidden jobs?
I did a google search and have downloaded the instructions from Pelican Pars and it all looks pretty straightforward. Any and all help much appreciated.
First of all the rack is not sealed particularly well so if you do not find you need to top off the steering rack reservoir too often then you may want to leave it for another day.
Here are my notes on removing and installing the rack and reservoir.
Some folks go the extra mile and rebuild the rack themselves. One can send their rack out for $250 to $500 to get it rebuilt properly. The DIY rebuild may require taking it out twice if the rebuild didn't work out. For this reason, I left the rebuilding to others and saved the lion's share of the servicing cost by removing and reinstalling the rebuild myself.

Hopefully, this post and responses don't go, or will not be allowed to go by moderators, off the rails...
Andy has saved all on this Forum, whether members or not- and the original poster is not a member- and whether all agree with him always or not, hundreds if not thousands of dollars and similar amounts of time and headaches he has generously assembled and freely shared. He has personally responded to me about a number of related issues, and never asked for anything in return. In fact I asked him for his address so I could send him something, in gratitude for his ongoing generosity, I never noticed the "Donate" button on the upper left before this post after looking at Andy's stuff or 7+ years.
Back off, pay your member dues, and push or don't push whatever buttons you wish.

Andy is very active here, and I agree he's a good contributor. That said, more and more, his advice ends directing the user to his personal website, which I never noticed until recently. What's the point of his website? Is it his retirement plan? Donations and advertisement? I just find it odd that he'd limit his responses within the confines of this forum and instead drive traffic to his site. Maybe he's a Russian spy.

Hi Todynot,
Russian spy? Ha, if my life was only that interesting!
I sent you a private message replying to your legitimate question.
Oh, and for the record, I have received only 1 donation from all the readers of my Blog.
May I suggest we take this discussion off-line.

I have had several interactions with Andy re: a/c and now the steering rack. Both times I have offered to send him something and both times he has not replied about me sending him something.
Over the years I have seen members drop posting because they've been flamed for something they've posted. Many of you might remember Adrian Streather, the author of several books on Porsche's including the 993. He was a fountain of information but was flamed for some reason. So he stopped posting......our loss. Thankfully I have his email. If we keep this stupidity up, we may lose Andy and all his wealth of knowledge, just like Adrian.
I'm going to offer some suggestions to folks on the 993 forum.. It's your choice to take them or leave them. The first one is whatever you DON'T say cannot come back and bite you in the *** and the second one is that you always treat others the way you would like to be treated. You can take my suggestions or not it's up to you, but if we keep civility on this forum everyone will be better off. If you choose to think my suggestions aren't worth the bandwith....well, I guess I'll keep my *** intact and not say anything.

I think some may have ended up on the Facebook group - which is not as efficient as a message board like Rennlist. A shame.
There's Robin Sun. Let's not forget Clark's Garage.
I suspect Andy is trying to popularize his site. Not a thing wrong with that. There's some good info there. People may very well come to rely on it as he continues to build it.
