OT: Be Careful out there in Calif!

It might have changed, but the last time I checked, CHP was not allowed to use radar on freeways in California.....they have to pace you, which is why they have to go to "stealth" cars.
You still may have time to cancel that order......

CHP has been using radar on freeways for as long as I remember. Obviously, not during high volume traffic and mostly on the open highways. But, I have seen them use radar on the 405, 5, 91, 73 and all the Orange County toll roads. My V1 catches everyone of them all the time.

Up here in Northern California they never use them on the main Highways 101, 880 and 680. Everytime I have seen someone being pulled over I have seen them being paced. I always look in my rear-view mirror when driving and on multiple occasions saw the cop coming up in time to slow down and watch him go by and pull over someone in front of me.
It maybe only around hear but I have heard the same thing, namely on the main highways here the CHP can't (or doesn't) radar gun people.
A few months ago I was out for a drive down 680 and was in a pack of 6 cars or so doing approx. 80 in the left lane behind a cop. Some tunnel-vision driver came blasting up on the right hand side and as soon as he went by the cop put the lights on and pulled him over.

Since 1998, the CHP has been authorized to use radar on all California freeways. My V1 picks them up all of the time when we go down to Calif every year.
Read the signs along the freeways that warns you that radar is being be used....

This does not apply to highways (such as PCH, Ortega Hwy, etc.), only freeways, and as I said, things might have changed. I know that all CHP cars HAVE radar, and they probably do use them to see how fast a car is going. But no CHP freeway ticket I've seen in the last 8 years listed the radar as the source of measuring speed (there is a special box for them to check off), and no CHP officer I've heard has testified that he used the radar to form the basis of his opinion. All CHP officers are trained not only to pace cars, but to determine speed of a vehicle while they themselves are stationary.
Even if CHP doesn't use radar as a source to write a ticket, this doesn't invalidate the benefits of a radar detector on a freeway, though. As Viken can attest to, they can pick up stray CHP radar, alerting you to their presence......that's the point of them, isn't it?

Has anyone heard about LIDAR. I just read about it, but can't remember where. Apparently, the LAPD(sounds strange) has this new technology which combines laser and radar. Wish I could remember where I read it...I think it was Autoweek or Automobile magazine.

Never leave home without V1. CHP do use radar, catch them all the time on the freeways with my V1.

Maybe that works to tell if someone is speeding, but isn't that kind of useless in actual practice? I mean, what are they going to tell a court, "based on my expert training, but no actual speed measuring equipment, I determined this Porsche driver was heinously breaking the law at 83 miles an hour"?

UPDATE: I confirmed today (from the horse's mouth)that CHP do not use radar as a source of speed when writing a ticket on LA freeways. They are in the process of having radar authorized for use on freeways, but it has not been approved yet. They do, however, use radar in non-freeway areas where engineering surveys have been completed. Again, that doesn't mean that they don't turn the radar on (and therefore can give away their position with radar detectors), it just means for now you will not receive a radar-based speed ticket on Metro LA freeways. If you get a ticket, the officer will testify (truthfully or not ) that he paced you, or estimated your speed based on his/her experience and/or training.
And Brett, that is exactly what CHP officers testify to, after describing the experience they have and training they have received to make such judgments. Usually though an officer will testify to an approximate speed or a range of speed, i.e. "between 80-85 mph." And trust me, the judges here RARELY do not accept their "expert" opinions.

Here in Detroit we have a red camaro w/ Sheriff writing on passenger side only. Red and blue lights are integrated into his rear view mirror. VERY hard to see them. If your in front, or to the left of him. You're caught. Unless you slow for every Red camaro(alot in the motorcity)
