How to change fan belts??
During my last oil change on my C4S I considered the condition of the belts but time ran out and they staid on. Unfortunately that was the wrong decision and I need to do this job right now since the alternator belt failed.
I have wrenched a lot including complete engine and gear box overhauls but never on a Porsche. Having a 993 has thus far been trouble free (apart from the really entertaining oil changes which I have down to a fine art by now :-).
Question how does one release the belts from the alternator/fan pulleys? Remove the pulley or does the fan housing have to be loosened by releasing the steel belt that keeps it in place? The A/C pump looks like it will slide over if the bolts are loosened. It that correct?
Any other piece that needs to move in order to do this job?
Thanks for any advice.

Thanks, that is just what I needed!
Can't believe Porsche abandoned the serpentine set-up that was on my '95. They are less likely to suffer sudden failure and easier to change. This system looks like a lot of other things on the 993, over-engineered...

The belts are off. Used a torx and a regular allen but I admit that it is a bit tricky that way. There are better tools for the job. The A/C unit is an cinch to move.
The diy site is really cool. I took the rear bumper skin of my 95 when a parking incident required a small repair and had quite a time figuring out how to take it off. (This where my sense of over-engineered comes from.) Now I wish I had documented that job like it is done on this site. This type of work is seldom explained in manuals and pretty easy to do.
Thanks for the input.

George,
I was thinking about the same thing, I just figuered he must meant some other non-911 Porsche. Because I don't think any air cooled 911 had serpentine belt.

Gents,
Sorry, but I owned a 993 built late '94 and it has a serpetine belt. I have to pick up new belts for the C4S and I'll quizz the techs at the dealer.
Worst case I will ask the buyer of my car to take a picture and email it to me but the car was most definitively an early 993 (in terms of US model).

My '95 was build in late '94 as well, and it does not have a serpentine belt.
If yours has a serpentine belt, someone modified it.

Maybe a supercharger was installed? I know the TPC unit uses a serpetine belt

Wow, this one is ancient. I'll answer my own question, look on P-car.com!!
My previous 95 did NOT have a serpentine belt I ascertained later......my bad!! I must have been smoking something strong to come up with that thought....

Keith, the manuals have two pages regarding the belts (albeit not very detailed or with great illustrations) in the maintenance section of volume one 03-6 and 03-7. These two pages are reiterated in section 27- power supply- of volume one ( 27-7 and 27-8) . if you need more details, let me know and i will get them to you.
cheers,
