Post Why does my car SMELL like a Porsche?

I gave a friend and 996 Owner a ride in my Turbo yesterday, and Traffic Pro demo.

His first comment, "This just smells like a Porsche"!

I have noticed the car smells different. There is an "old insulation" smell. The smell I remember from touring places with old electric equipment, an old used space/rocket museum,.. old aircracft... even though it is a modern (1996) machine is smells like it is from 1960.

I know the leather smells and feels very different from the 996. Is it the heat exchangers for the the Ventilation system?

Anyone else notice this?

Maybe its something to do with that "machined" feel about everything the 993 does. The interior is strict funtion over form with the highest quality (i think the 996 is too stylised if thats a word); also the driving experience. All adds to that machined feel.

I am so glad that others have mentioned this.

I thought it was just mine that seemed to have a smell that I have only smelt in lorries/car carriers/AA vehicles/ factory machines, etc

Mine smells in the way that I would expect a race car to smell like, a mixture of oil/petrol/electrics, etc.

Regards

Yeah, they do smell unique, I believe it's the oil smell, at least that's what I always thought it was.

It does smell different. I ahve an '80 SC (for sale...), and a '96 993. They both smell the same.
Cheers,

It smells just like an old VW!!!!!

No question about it! My first car was a 73 VW squareback, and the similarities (and smell) are defintitely similar.

For example, look at an old VW Bug rain gutters. Now look at our 993's. Look similar?

What about our sun visors, with the low-tech mirror? Same as on old VW's.

Our Fog light ****? You guessed it!

I think the smell comes from the engine, the vinyl, the air cooled lay-out! Even my boss notices how my car smells like a VW, and he say's it as a compliment, and I take it as a compliment.

Speaking of cologne on the steering wheel ... how DO you get that off of there? Seems like my PO patted his face down with Paco Raban with his left hand every morning and then grabbed the wheel. Tried some water and a clean rag briefly, made no difference.

Back when I had my 87 930, I went on a blind date with a woman who had last been in a friend's 911 about 12 years before and as soon as she got in the car, she said, "My god, this smells EXACTLY like my friends old 911." I think it's the aging of the interior materials, a whiff of oil off the heat exchangers and a touch of leather. I had an 88 Targa that had water leaks before I bought it and I went through hell to get the musty smell out of it (Odor Wand and a hair dryer on the carpets after running them through the wash did the trick, finally) but once it was gone the traditional 911 aroma re-established itself. The 993 is a little bit different from the "classic" 911, but it's quite nice on its own.

I think it's in the carpet.
Ever notice how strong that smell is in the trunk?! The trunk is the least ventilated and smells the strongest. It could also be the wiring harness, notice how it is wrapped like old aircraft harnesses, all cloth.
Anyhow I like the smell.

Boy, am I glad you started this thread! I was wondering what that smell was!
It's like one part oil, one part leather and one part fear.

Not exactly like a VW because in the Porsche you have leather in more places that in the VW. So the smell is different. I can't stand the smell of the VW. My dad had a couple during his early years and when we went for trips the smell would make me sick... ...I would guess the vinyl and insulation with the heat create that particular smell... sorry, in my case I can't deal with it, not in the VW.

As to the Porsche, my wife knows when I've been driving the car... it is more so when I drive the 951... she says I smell like old leather with a twist of gas and burnt oil

Anyway, I like it!

And yes, it is a different smell from an old Porsche to the new 996... I guess it has to do with the changes in materials for the new cars. Even my 964 smells like the 993 I had before. Not so with the last 996 I drove... different feel...
