Best MOD List for a Tiptronic ????
O.k. I see LOTS and LOTS of references to the stick shift majority 993s as far as must-do mods (the Lightweight flywheel, ROW gears, tranny seem to be top 3)
BUT what about the TIP?
I've already got H&R coilovers with optional sway bars, front strut bar and K&N filter on my stock motor sound packaged 993 Tiptronic.
Anyone have a top 10 list or even a top 5 list for a Tiptronic 993 owner for increased power?
BTW: It seems I can't chip my 96 or even reprogram it without a 97-98 ECU so I'm not sure that is a wise choice for me???

Hi:
Your 993 can be modified for more performance, but its not going to be cheap.
Since you cannot use close-ratio gears or the RS LWF, you must concentrate on engine upgrades to accomplish your goals. Here's what I would do:
1) Chip (if your car is a '96, you'll need a '97 ECU)
2) RS Cams & intake valves
3) 102mm P/C's (3.8 kit)
Those three things really help,.....

I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for a 97 ECU... (sigh).. I missed out on one recently too
Could you help explain Item #3 (forgive my ignorance but it makes no sense to me)

Steve-
Would the TPC Supercharger give appx the same HP boost as the 3.8 L upgrade? My guess is no. What are the pros / cons of each?
Thanks -

Is there anything that can be done with axle or final drive ratios? Trans swapping? Just thinking out loud here, as IME the options generally are few....
Does anybody know of any person or company that has done performance upgrades to Tip cars other than supercharging or chips???

hi Bob,
looking in the factory shop manual, it lists the '94 and '95 ROW trans. (A 50/04) as having a final drive ratio of 3.667 to 1, compared to the A 50/05 tip's ratio of 3.556 to 1.
not a whole lot of difference. 9:33 teeth vs. 9:32.
all four of the gear ratios (and reverse), are the same for both transmissions.
1st 2.479
2nd 1.479
3rd 1.000
4th 0.728
rev 2.086

Is there even anyone who has a Tip AND the TPC Supercharger? Can the Tip even handle the extra power from the Supercharger?
I know the newest Tip is available on the Turbo 911 996 BUT isn't it true that the 993 TT was NEVER offered in Tip because the Tip couldn't handle it?

Max, thank you very much for the quick and informative reply (as always!). :-) Not the results that I wanted to hear, but the info I was after.
Anybody know of any other possibilities?
Chris, I have corresponded with two folks with the Tip/TPC combo, and they are pleased with it and have experienced no Tip-related issues. If they don't chime in here, feel free to PM me for more info.

Hi Howard:
There is no question that a blower gives a bigger power boost than a 3.8 RS upgrade. Nobody would argue that.
There are some differing opinions about which upgrade has a greater long-term impact on engine longevity. Anyone contemplating aftermarket forced-induction should speak to some experienced personnel in the Porsche trade who have nothing at stake to get some input on this.

Thanks Steve for the sage advice.
I am not even close to "the slippery slope" of performance upgrades.(thank God I don't live near Viper Bob)
The last thing I would want to do is shorten my engines life for thirty extra horses with forced induction. Frankly, for my purposes the stock 993 has plenty of power and I am happy driving it.
