Default 993 headlight bulb replacement

Yes...I searched all over but still have a question.
i was watching “wheeler dealers” last night on the 993 makeover. They simply changed out the original headlight bulbs for new oem headlight bulbs. They stated that technology has changed over the years and by doing this you can pick up 30% more light. The bulbs are only $10.00 each at sunset. Does anyone know if this is correct?
thanks in advance!

I'm not sure your standard $5 halogen bulb is any different than a bulb from 10 or 20 years ago, but there are more options now to purchase more expensive halogen bulbs that burn a bit brighter, at the same wattage, at the expense of bulb life.

I would suggest to upgrade to HIDs (many threads on here of doing so). Cost, time and effort is minimal with the new slim ballasts and light output is phenomenally better than stock halogens.

+ (another) 1.

I installed Tore’s in my last 993 and was blown away by how good they are and it’s an easy DIY install. Waiting for them to be back in stock to install in my current 993 (don’t drive it often at night, so waiting is NBD).

+1 on Tore's HIDs. Dramatic difference vs OEM.

If you want to go cheap the stock H-1 bulbs are about $6 each, and put out about 1550 lumens, dismal light at best. For about $30 more get get a pair of the Sylvania Silver Star or Philips Vision Plus H-1 bulbs, which has 1750 lumens, a boost of 15-20%, now where close to the 100% more claimed. Note: If the bulbs have a colored (Blue or Yellow) coating they may look brighter but lack the distance and output of the clear bulbs.
I have Tor's low beam HID and they are the best, affordable and easy to put in. hopefully he gets them back in stock soon. The Retrofit Source also has some good lights but a bit more costly. Do not go LED as the stock projector lenses are not designed to project the beam of an LED, plus the heatsinks or fans may interfere with the stock housings

If you were going Phillips I would go Extreme Vision , I did for the high beam, Tore HID for low beam. Osram has a similiar style bulb: Nite Breaker

Could you please provide more details regarding this high beam bulb (specs, where to get it, etc)? I also have Tore’s HID for low beam but I would like to improve the high beam in the most simple way. Thanks

I just got a email from Tore and he said that due to covid, he can’t get the parts out of China. He doesn’t have a eta for now.
i went ahead and ordered the osram laser lights. I did some reading and the online forums had good things to day. They are only $20 a set, cheap experiment.

The draw back with lights like Osram Nightbreaker is that they last considerably shorter time than stock H1s.

It's a bit like when you hit an old 40W light bulb, it then shines brighter but lasts shorter time.

But i do recomend Osram Nightbreaker H1s, I have them for both full and dipped beam in my car.

I saw in the reviews that some bulbs have as short as a 100 hour life!

For the high beam I have been thinking about buying the the Morimoto 2Stroke 2.0 from the Retrofit Source
https://www.theretrofitsource.com/h1...-2STROKE-H11_2
I have the Philips Extreme Vision in there now, but Tor's low beam HID are so good I don't use the high beams all that much, as it is almost too much light. My driving is mostly on rural two lane roads that have lots of reflector signs and center line, the low beams are so well controlled that the reflected light is minimized to where you can see the darker/further out areas better. Adding a wide spread high beam makes more light but also a lot of glare from the signs, making your eyes shut down a bit more and thus not seeing in the far reaches of the road. Retrofit also has some better projector lenses that can be installed supposedly with better optics.

Hi ATSR,
The generic ones on eBay work just fine, with the slim ballast the entire upgrade fits inside the lamp pod. They come with wires to the bulb that are much longer than needed for our cars so one has to bundle the wire up in the headlight pod with a tie-wrap. This makes for a bit of a less neat install but works just fine, Be sure to bench test the lights before installing them as sometimes they are DOA new out of the box. I have had a generic kit in my daily driver 993 now for probably 10 years and they work just fine.
