Cool Must Have Tools

New to Porsche / Euro cars in general. My 993 is in route to be delivered and of course I'm very excited. I like to work/tinker on my cars and plan to do future preventative maintenance. Mostly everything but engine rebuilds.

That being said, what are the "must own" tools to work on a Porsche / 993.

I've looked at a lot of How To's and see there's a lot of Hex bolts, is everything on this car is metric? I don't own any real hex tools as I've never really needed them.

Hoping to start a thread on must have tools and recommended tools/jacks/jack stands/etc. for projects/preventative maintenance and would be nice if we could post links as well.

Congratulations on your 993. Please post pics when it arrives.

Here’s a thread where many tools have been covered:

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...diy-1-4-a.html

Esco jack stands are popular bc of the flat top and are very stable.

Here is a start:
  • Steel low profile long reach floor jack (Harbor Freight)
  • Two jack stands with flat tops
  • A set of standard of 3/8" drive metric socket tools (Harbor Freight)
  • A set of standard of 3/8" drive deep metric sockets
  • 3/8" drive extensions long/medium/short and flex joint
  • Set of metrix closed & open end box wrenches with a few larger ones added (Harbor Freight
  • The two hydraulic fitting wrench sizes used on a 993, High-quality ones as the inexpensive ones distort and ruin the fittings when used. (Snap-On or the better line of Craftsmen)
  • A torque wrench that goes up to 150 foot-pounds (Harbor Freight)
  • 3/8" &1/2" breaker bars
  • 1/2" drive socket for wheel nuts, and one for steering wheel
  • Spark Plug Socket with hex in its body for working on struts.
  • A large vice-grip or oil filter wrench pliers (Harbor Freight)
  • Set of Allen wrenches, set of star wrenches
  • Tool or 3/8" drive socket for alternator end shaft
  • Belt tensioning gauge
  • Inexpensive Volt-Ohm meter
  • An oil pressure bleeder if you will be servicing your own clutch or brakes
  • Replace the stock emergency jack in your car with a scissors jack (Harbor Freight)
  • Replace your spare tire inflator with a more reliable one (Harbor Freight)
  • Keep a set of belts and spare fasteners use in a belt change in the frunk. Make note what tools were used to change the belts and store those tools in the frunk
  • A 1.5 Amp rated or greater battery charger/maintainer with a cigarette lighter adapter.
  • A voltmeter display that fits in the cigarette lighter (eBay)
  • Durametric OBDC-II or other OBDC-II reader that can access 993 Proprietary codes & laptop to run it on. Or a generic reader that can only read generic emission-related codes such as an Autel AutoLink.

The above list is pretty comprehensive but I would add (from harbor freight)
  • “Set of Allen wrenches, set of star wrenches” I would also, own both of these in sockets as well
  • also... the open end/box wrench set...get the one that goes all the way up to 25mm. Make sure that it has a 17 and 19mm in the set. Some of them skip over those and you will need them

If you are looking to buy a box wrench with a ratchet end then suggest one from tekton which is a six side. Much better design than a 12 point rachet wrench IMHO

Thats funny, because I returned my extended double box ratcheting wrenches because they were six point. Drove me crazy.

Is it OK to buy a new set of wrenches even if they are duplicates of what you already own? Asking for a friend..
He wants to try the six side to see if it makes a difference.

Good suggestions.

I'll add:
  • super bright LED shop light. I use this Ridgid panel light and love it. Bought a two battery and charger kit when it went on sale. Light can be AC powered, too. https://www.ridgid.com/us/en/gen5x-h...ng-panel-light
  • cordless impact wrench to remove stubborn bolts and to speed up disassembly
  • magnetic tool retriever
  • claw end tool retriever

Much more to add. Maybe later.

Congrats on the new 993.
If your car has remote FOBs, a spare FOB battery and a little tiny phillips to open the FOB case.

Here is a YT clip I came across on Tekton few weeks back. Not affiliated yada yada.

If you just have a regular 12 point and an open end then this ratchet wrench gives you a socket replacement in tight spaces. I find this helpful on the transmission mount bolts as an example. Or you can buy the stubby wrench with a ratchet end which will widen your tool collection.

https://www.tekton.com/stubby-ratche...ce-count=12-pc

My wrenches.
1. Open end and 12 point closed
2. Flared set
3. Open end and ratchet end
4. Offset
Looking at the short wrenches and wrestling with the 6 side ratchet on the other end. These are all metric and I just have a regular SAE open end and 12 point to go with sockets..

This is a great socket set for everyday use and complete. I just bought a 1/4 wera socket set on Amazon because you want a small profile for those smaller bolts in hard to reach places and price is not unreasonable for the quality.

https://www.tekton.com/3-8-in-dr-skt...range=combined

It was $70 a few months ago.
Amazon Amazon

Buying 6 point sockets instead of 12 makes sense to me. Less stripping. However, down side is that you need to buy specific triple square/star sockets for our German car bolts which is recommended anyway to avoid stripping.
