Post missing oil

Hello all,

maybe you all can make me understand betta.. i recently gave my car for service i.e full check at my local OPC..

the specialist informed me of an oil leak.. and he had to replace a few parts.. i gave the go ahead cause i noticed my oil gauge dropping..

now its been a week since i got my car from service..and iv'e noticed the needle of the gauge at a good warm position.. to be at 2'oclock..

so i parked the car and checked my dipstick properly.. the oil level was about half a cm below maximum level..

is this normal...is the engine consuming the oil ?..cause i ran my hand below the oil chamber and not leaks..

i moved the car and no drops..what could this bee ??

Hi Seve,

What parts did the shop replace? Where did they determine was the origin of the leak?

I normally keep my oil level on the dipstick about a cm below the full and the gauge registers maybe 5mm below the full mark. But remember, the dash gauge needle varies depending on how warm the engine is. If my temp gauge is at 9 o'clock, oil level is higher than if the temp is at 7:30. As far as I know, this is not an indication of any "fault," but is normal. I'd take a peek underneath at the engine periodically just to see for myself. Hope this helps.

Hi Seve,

You'll find a bunch of threads in the archives on oil consumption. But to answer your question: yes.
I believe I've heard the "official" acceptable consumption rate as stated by Porsche is 1 quart/800 miles (someone correct me on this if I'm mistaken!). For me, though, it's about 1 quart/4000-5000 miles...and that's not unusual from what I remember others mentioning. Hope this helps.

1 quart for 4000 to 5000 miles ?? wow.. well the level in my gauge and the dipstick has surely reduced after 300-400 kms (we have the KM system)...is something wrong with my car ?

So far I think it sounds normal (on top levels, gauge drops more than oil in dipstick). And if the engine temperature varies, oil level varies accordingly (more hot engine = oil level higher).

Just keep monitoring (from dipstick) and if it still is using oil too much, then you might have a problem.

What oil the shop used?

Keep checkin the level (from dipstick) and let us know how it goes.

Singh

I believe that You already know, but ...
Check oil always with the car on level surface. It is amazing how much it influences on the dipstick. Engine should idle at normal 9-a-clock temperature. Oil temp. makes also big difference.

Jack:

i did the oil check up about 10 mins ago..and yup the oil level is the same..looked under the car..no drops..maybe 1 or 2.. but it looks like water when i touched it.. transparent colour..no odor..

car was normal 9 o'clock temp.. and guage shows the same.. but when i got my car im sure the guage showed 1 o'clock ..now maybe between 1 and 2 o'clock..

funny..now i might not be able to read my wrist watch.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Here's something that caught me by surprise:

After the usual driving around town, local freeways, etc. I went on a long road trip 700+ miles at 75-90 mph. My oil level dropped like a rock when I checked it at the end of the day. I thought Sh*t, my consumption is going through the roof at these high rpms. Apparently the long drive burns out some accumulated moisture from the oil, causing the level to drop. I didn't add any more for the next 1500 miles.

Moral of the story: Take more road trips!
