Go easy on me: I'm new.
In case I ask any already-covered questions, I want it to be known that yes I do know how to do an archive search. I started lurking here about a year ago when I was looking to upgrade from a 74 911S targa to a 993. In fact, I went back and read almost all of the posts in the archives, so I have at least some idea of what has already been covered. However, just to be safe, I have set aside $5,000 for the reinstatement fee, in case I ask a really dumb question and you guys ban me from the board.
Living in the "Porsche-middle-of-nowhere," this board has already been a great source of information and entertainment. Sometimes I don't if the people living close to the Porsche activities know how good they have it. This is how bad I have it:
I bought and restored my first Porsche, a 74 911S Targa, in 1993 while I was in law school in Spokane, Washington. When I finished school, I moved to Troy, Idaho, a town of about a thousand people near the Washington border in northern Idaho. The first time I came to town to look at a house to buy, I decided to drive around town first just to get a feel for the place. I stopped in at the grocery store (yes, there is only one) to buy a Coke. At the register, the clerk, who had some of her teeth left (I swear to God, I'm not making this up), looked out at the Porsche and in all seriousness asked, "What kind of car in that?" I knew immediately that I was going to have to learn to enjoy my Porsche hobby from a more solitary standpoint.
Anyway, I will post pictures of the car (96 993 C2, grand prix white, black interior) as well as the shop I recently built with a Rotary 9000lbs. lift in it, so that I can do as much work on the car as possible. The nearest dealership is 7 hours away and the nearest independent whom I trust is 5 hours away. My first piece of advice: If you enjoy working on your car and there is any way to swing it, get a lift. I started working on cars when I was 13 and have wanted a lift since I first used one in high school auto shop. After having the lift for a little over a year, I can't imagine working on a car without it.
Sorry for such a long and rambling post. Maybe that $5,000 will be needed sooner than I had hoped. Regards, Rob

Rob,
Congratulations on the 993 (and the lift - I wish my current garage could accomodate one)! Hopefully, Rennlist will help you find some like-minded Porsche enthusiasts in Idaho. It's been wonderful for me, since many of my best friends in Kentucky hail from this site.
Please do not be intimidated by all the "check the archives" rhetoric in recent months. Overall, this is a friendly board, and we are glad to have you.

I know there's a guy in Montana who has several older Porsches, and has been posting updates on his own garage/playpen building project over the past few months. I don't know which end of Montana he's in, but maybe you can still drive 100+ there without getting arrested?

Rob,
Welcome to the community, Its a small world...I went to the University of Idaho in Moscow and spent many weekends in Troy playing pool for drinks with the locals in the winter months...Great place to drink beer. I can't imagine a 993 in Troy, but enjoy

I know the bar well. I don't drink--developed a strange allergy to alcohol --but I am on the volunteer fire department/ambulance and have driven more than one poor local who was unfortunate enough to cross paths with a pool shark from the university to the hospital with alcohol poisoning.
Regards, Rob.
