Default how high do you RPM in normal city driving?

I am new to my 993 and haven't has a stick for a long time. I have been shifting between 2-2500 rpms and feel like I may be babying it a little too much. Where are you guys shifting for normal driving?

That’s too low. I’ll typically shift at 3k. After warmed up - I may go to 4K or higher unless I’m intentionally keeping revs down for cruising. The car really only comes alive after 3k.

I often let friends drive my 993 with me and to a person they all shift way too early. these cars do much better when shifting around 3500 - 4000. (once its warmed up) On a track you would shift even higher but.... for spirited cruising and canyon carving - below 3000 and you are lugging it....They are made to be driven!!!
(nice to see another 993 cab in the area!!!)

I agree. For everyday normal driving, 3000 - 3500 is good. Obviously, if you are driving spiritedly, take it higher.

There is no agreed set RPM level to change a gear at- it depends on what you're doing.

For spirited road driving- change whenever you need as dictated by road or conditions- or whenever you run out of revs...

For cruising around, then it doesn't matter. In the UK we were/are taught to 'block change' around town to avoid unnecessary gear changes e.g. from 2nd to 4th and vice versa.

Occasionally, but not often. I have some mechanical sympathy and don't feel the juice is worth the squeeze.

I seem to remember reading (I think in the owners manual) that the engine works best cruising at 3000rpm, that cruising at 2000rpm is too low, and to never put significant load on the engine below 1500rpm. That being the case, in city cruising situations I try to cruise around 3000rpm and upshift between 3500-4000rpm, even with fairly low engine loading.

Warm it up first. Put some thought into making sure the oil is warm. After that don't think and just drive. You didn't buy this car to shift at 2K...

Same for me. And I take it up to about 6k rpm at least once a week.

I would estimate around 3800-4200. Just listen and feel the car it will tell you where it’s comfortable. These cars definitely talk to you once you get accustomed to them. RC
