Question very specific springs question

Let me begin by thanking all who have contributed to the wealth of knowledge contained on this forum regarding 993 suspensions. I, like many, have saved hours of research by simply searching and reading the archives. With that said, I am nearing the end of my personal suspension quest and I would like feedback on one last issue.

I am definitely buying Bilstein HDs and will mate them with either H&R springs or RoW M030 springs. That's it, no other options being considered. I want to lower my currently stock U.S. height car no more than 1 inch and I use my car exclusively as a daily driver. This is a strict "must-change-the-shocks-so-may-as-well-improve-the-looks" mod.

My question is whether or not there is a noticeable difference in ride quality between these two sets of springs, and can H&Rs be set as high as RoWs? In advance, thanks again for all of the valuable information.

You cannot "set ride height" of the H&R's to ROW. It is fixed. I am not sure how you define ride quality but with the Bilstein HD's and any spring, you will probably notice a huge improvement with regards to dampening over your current worn out stock set up.

So to answer your question, I doubt you will notice the difference in springs as much as the difference in shocks.

Good point. I guess my real question is which set of springs is lower? Thanks for the reply, I'm looking forward to the Bilsteins.

I believe the H&R's are lower than ROW.

H&R supposedly lowers by 1.4" (go to their website to verify), whereas ROW M030 lower anywhere from 0.5" to 1" depending on who you ask.

H&R doesn't publish their spring rates. There's disagreement over the spring rates of the ROW M030. Some say the ROW M030 is stiffer than stock (eg. Gert), while others indicate about the same (ref. Bruce Anderson, Excellence, May 2001, p. 108).

Phil,

I just completed the installation of ROW M030 springs and Bilstein HD's from Gert. As you are looking to do, the result was exactly a 1" lowered car at all four corners. As others have pointed out, the info available indicates the H&R springs will lower more than 1".

I cannot comment on the ride as the car is still in hibernation. I would suggest using the ROW M030 springs with the Bilstein HD's.

Mike,
Thank you for that info. This is the route I plan to take with my car in the future when suspension work is called for.

I would agree with those who recommended the ROW M030 springs. I have them in my car. Compared to my US M030 springs, they are minutely stiffer, but nothing to write home about. The front springs are wound with tapered material, so they are progressive. The rear ROW spring is identical, only a little shorter.

I used the factory springs as they were recommended to me by many many people.

Get the HD's with the extended threading on the damper bodies..

Phil...

Like I mentioned in the PM....Row M030 is the way to go for what you are looking for. You will not be let down. However, if you buy from Gert (www.carnewal.com) ...beware of the devalued dollar....OUCH !!!

Good Luck...and you best post pics after install !!!

Phil,
I just installed H&R Sport Springs w/ Bilstein HDs. The ride is incredible!
H&Rs WILL lower your car more.

With driver in the car (me=195lbs), the measurement from the ground to the center of my fender is...

Front...24 13/16"
Rear... 25 1/8"
Hope that helps.

I like 'em LOW!
