Default 993 Starter Motor - anyone replaced it with...

...a 996 stater motor?

A Bosch unit definitely seems to be the way to go, however which one?

993 motor (bottom) or a 996 motor (middle)

Would there be any drawbacks of the shorter, 996 unit? It apparently cranks the engine much faster too.

This discussion point recently came up on 911uk, however, without conclusion. Those who have fitted it appear to have no issues thus far.

What do Rennlisters think?

I'm curious. The 996 cars are known for poor quality, but a Bosch part is a Bosch part. I wonder how it would work.

Interesting question.
In the Bosch catalog, the application crosses to different part numbers 996 being SR0808N, 993 being SR0451N
The alternate part number is listed as compatible. The housing lengths differ and there seems to be an error in shaft rotation direction in one of the listings.

I think I've done this by accident, or maybe by Bosch, hard to tell. I replaced my starter as part of last winter's Great Thrash, with this:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BZN61O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BZN61O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Listed as an SR0451N, came in a Bosch box, looked good, so I didn't look closely to see if it was a 1:1 match with the old one. It's definitely short, and from the pic has a 996 part number. Anyway, it bolted right up and does indeed spin the engine a little faster than the old one did. I thought that was because it was new, go figure. I think it's a 996/997 turbo & GT3 starter, btw, which would make sense as Metzger motors.

Net: buy and enjoy.

Nice one - presumably no ill effects thus far?

It's temping, if there are no drawbacks.
Hoping a technically minded Rennlister who understands the differences, apart from the physical size, can chime in with respect to potential and/or long term drawbacks....

Not much to be concerned about, high-performance starters have long been an upgrade item. Unlike aftermarket pieces, this OEM starter is physically compatible, and it has about the same power rating as original so there is no extra load on the wiring.

I've had mine in place for about 6 months and 5000 miles. It's probably started the engine 200 times, with nary a hiccup.

There is also a Bosch remanufactured starter SR0429X which lists compatibility with 1990-1998 and 2002-2005. Why 1999-2001 were left out is beyond me. ??

Is there a price difference between the two starters?

I replaced mine but it is on race car. Go to the demonspeed site. They have Bosch starter for 375. (If I recall correctly). I had cup starter on my car and had it rebuilt twice. The new starter cracks the car MUCH faster. I should have changed it years ago...

I saw that in the Bosch cross. Could it have to do with some sort of fit interference where the longer starter housing doesn't clear some other part under the car in the early 996 that changed on the later model years?

I ordered a starter SR0451N (alternate part numbers 9660410700, 99660410701, 99660410702) based on what I read on rennlist and was surprized that I received one with "closed nose". See attached picture of the old starter and the new starter. Interestingly, they both have the same part number SR0451N.

P

lease confirm that the closed nose starter is not correct and I need an open nose starter.
Thanks

I put a 996 part number Bosch starter in my 964 so i assume 993 is similar. That closed end unit won’t work. Iirc my former 89 g50 g body car Used a started like that.
