Default Building a 993 Supercharged RSR clone

Have been emailing Richard Clewett about it for my car- he doesn't officially support it so I'd like to know if anyone has done it and ask about which pulley size you opted for on the supercharger.

Richard has given some great advice but I'd like some real world experience to discuss with him

Cheers

Go through this thread. You’ll find what you’re looking for: TPC

And this thread: TPC again

The 2.1" Eaton M90 keyed pulley from Pulley Boys is perfect for the TPC/Clewett set up. Add a 6PK1195 ribbed belt and you've nailed it! Now - go enjoy!

@Trevor-uk Does the 2.1" pulley overdrive the supercharger? Does that impact the air fuel ratio? Car is in the shop for TPC kit install and I am about to tell them to order a Clewett setup!

Thanks!

I thought you were selling the kit?

Hi Meenrod
I measured simply the outside diameter of each pulley and mathematically, the ratio from my TPC kit crank pulley to sc pulley was 2:1 (5.6":2.8"). To maintain that exact ratio with the Clewett kit, which has a 4.3" crank pulley, the sc pulley needed to be 2.15". As only 2.1" and 2.2" were available to me I plumped for the smaller one which (rudimentary maths again) suggested perhaps a 2.3% overdrive from standard (compared to a 2.3% underdrive with the 2.2" pulley). Not sure how that might affect the AFR with the TPC ECU setup - I junked the lot of that (including the extra manifold injectors), swapped out the engine injectors for larger flow (Boxster) injectors and had the original ECU remapped on a rolling road dyno to deliver optimum fuelling. All worked out rather well, even if I say so myself.

Nice one matey- over 400 horse is a fantastic number for a relatively low investment. I can't wait.

Got the 2.1 inch pulley. Agree that is close enough not to worry about. The shop is making me a custom fuel rail and replacing the two injectors in the manifold with something more modern. I have to stick with the Uni-Chip as I have a 96 model and the ECU's are not flashable. Not looking to sink over a grand buying a 97-98 ECU either.

Did you upgrade your clutch? With that power I'm wonder if a turbo clutch is needed- not sure the turbo has a different clutch though.

It is an excellent upgrade - I think you'll enjoy it!

I've been running a LWF and clutch (30k miles in) with the last 10k on the supercharger. Not noticed any shortcomings (other than having to shift up faster than I was used to ).

Which clutch plate did you use? Regular C2?

Whatever was in the RS flywheel and clutch kit - I didn't see it, just paid for it!

Just curious...are you also upgrading the internals? That's sort of Turbo level power there...

Update- Went for the Clewett setup recommended here with the 2.1-inch pulley for the supercharger 'snout'. Clewett setup gives a much better and more stable arrangement as the tensioner is mounted to the engine rather than the engine carrier which can flex and needs shims to align. Plus you lose some belts and have one belt in a more modern configuration. Make sure you order the crank pulley for cars with AC (I didn't) otherwise you can't attach your AC belt to the crank as there is no rib for it...

Was going to have the shop (EAG European Auto Group, in San Antonio, who are awesome and regularly convert automatic Ferraris to 6 speed and just unveiled the world's first 6 speed new Supra at SEMA... check out their IG or YT channel) build a new fuel rail to provide fueling to the 2 extra injectors that go in the manifold- this seems to be a weak spot and some people have experienced fires (!) and on my kit the rubber fuel line looked very cracked and worn. Anyway, EAG wasn't happy with it so they suggested switching out my existing 6 injectors for larger Boxster injectors (36lbs I believe) and not using injectors 7 and 8 in the manifold. The complication arises because I have 1996 OBD2 car with the non-flashable ECU means I can't reflash the ECU to run all this, so they were going to use the Uni-Chip box that came with the kit and create a custom tune on the dyno and have the Uni-Chip intercept the fuel signals...

...however, a call to Todd Knighton at Protomotive in Arkansas revealed that Todd CAN flash those non-flashable 1996 ECU's- what they actually do is take the ECU, open it up and solder in a daughter-board with the new mapping, This is great news as it makes for a much cleaner install, keeping all the OEM wiring and simply requires switching out the Varioram intake for the supercharger and intake, and swapping out the injectors for bigger ones.

Install is almost done and we are waiting for Protomotive to ship us the ECU back- stay tuned.
