Wink 993 board summary ! Just finished reading it all

Over the past couple of months I have browsed ALL 282 pages of posts from this board, and read all posts that seemed interesting ;-) Before you accuse me of defrauding my employer, it was mostly during lunch time and while compiling software, but anyhow... Here's a public service for newbies, a summary of 3 years of 993 board !

- Do a search before asking something that has probably been answered 20 times already, then ask anyway ;-)
- Steve Weiner is the PSS-9 and Chip Guru
- Gert @ carnewal.com is the euro-parts source of choice (and ships fast)
- Everybody loves Robin's RSR mufflers and his P-car.com website has enough DIY info that you should not need to visit a dealer ever again
- Most oil cooler and A/C issues can be fixed with a new relay, a new ballast resistor, or both
- Always carry a DME relay and a spare immobilizer remote battery, or else...
- Rev the crap out of the car and use techron once in a while to avoid the carbon buildup problem
- A C2/C4S bumper will fit a regular carrera (and look great)
- There is a harness recall affecting 95/96s, it's done free by porsche dealers, make sure your AC still works afterwards though
- Most members of this board would not be caught dead in a 996 ;-)
- Some of the spark plugs are a royal $#$$# to get to
- Asking for a carfax check is a big No-No, pay the $25
- Don't ask which 993 is best, drive them all and make up your own mind. In the end the best 993 is the one in your driveway.
- if you spin often enough, eventually you will hit an apex ;-)
- The engine sound tray needs to go
- the windshield squeaks, use pedro's ice wax and the factory rope kit
- A lightweight flywheel is a nice upgrade
- As of today there is still no consensus on a nice, reclining, 993 compatible, comfortable "racy" seat
- 993s sure eat up rear tires
- Be nice to your door check strap, or else face the "click"
- After 40 years of 911s, people still have trouble reading an accurate oil level !

So there... all summarized ;-)

Greg, you're a better man than me. I tried to read all the posts and just ran out of steam! The search function really does work well. Just phrase your query as many ways as possible and something will come up.

Plus, I find this board to be much more civilized than the BMW (roadfly) board I used to frequent. There, topics will often deteriorate and what you're left with is not much info. and a lot of acrimony.

Well, this IS Rennlist after all! Of course it's got quality members ;-) I remember the pre-rennlist days and the day John D and others started the email list. Never checked out the boards until recently, what a fantastic tool (too bad it's not a mirror of the email lists), my thanks to John for all that work!

I think the 993 area strikes a good balance of telling people to "do the search" and yet still answering newbies qustions. Let's face it, sometimes we just want to ask and get an answer, and sometimes we feel like answering someone... That board, and links to p-car.com, saved me over $1000 in the first week of ownership alone ;-)

Forget newbies, even I found it useful. And I've been around for 2 years...

Great job Greg. It's remarkable that thousands of hours expended by countless Rennlisters can be summarized in under 300 words. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

It is possible to hit every apex perfectly on one lap (without spinning), but very few of us have done it.

Good, and funny, summary Greg. And it did call to mind many long threads...

definitely a good candidate for an admin thread -- nice job!

I will pick a very small nit and suggest Calvo-izing (TM) this point:

-------------------------------------------
Don't ask which 993 is best, drive them all and make up your own (damn) mind. In the end the best 993 is the one in your driveway.
-------------------------------------------

Come to think of it, there are 'dialectizer' web pages for 'Mr. T', redneck speak, etc; I'm surprised there isn't a 'Ray Calvo' dialectizer yet.

Thanks, Greg. Nice job. I also learned I need to get a spare DME relay, in addition to the half dozen or so spare belts I carry.

A truly accurate Calvo dialectizer would produce this little extra bit on the end..

-------------------------------------------
Don't ask which 993 is best, drive them all and make up your own (damn) mind. In the end the best 993 is the one in your driveway, NUMNUTS!

WOW - I'm heading out this morning to find this Techron stuff and an extra immobilizer battery. You have potentially saved me $5000 and a very frustrating day! ($5000 = carbon build up, and having the extra battery when the current one expires will be a good day).

Keepem' coming.

What, no mention of the infinite oil postings? Guess there is no summary to that one yet!
