Informal Survey - Wheel Locks?
Hi:
I suspect our cars came with two wheel lock keys but I only have one and last week had a short period of stress before I recalled where I'd stowed it. Got me to thinking about the risk/reward of using wheel locks. Trying to picture thieves going after my standard Cup Wheels and putting my car on blocks when they could probably steal the whole car in less time. Has anyone experienced or heard of many wheel theft only episodes with our cars?
The flip side of the question is the thought of being stuck somewhere with a flat if I lose the key or it's damaged. Or should I just order a spare key from Porsche and make sure I keep them in a safe place. Any thoughts?

In my experience, the only person those locks prevent from taking off the wheel is the owner. There are readily available sockets that can take off locked wheels. They destroy the lock, but thieves don't care about that.

I remove them from all my cars. If I need to remove a wheel it's an emergency of some sort and I want no extra obstacles. Plus I check the torque on my lugs before tracking my cars and I want to check all of them not most of them.

My view is they only fail at the side of the road when used to mount a flat tire necessitating the use of a flatbed tow truck to change the tire. I say buy five regular nuts and get rid of them!

After Les Schwab exploded one of my lock bolts AND the keyed socket with an impact wrench I replaced all 4 lock bolts with regulars. I now know there are twenty bolt/key designs for the 993 after I had to ID mine and order a replacement from Stuttgart.
6 years later my wheels have yet to be stolen without locks.
Les Schwab did nothing to fix their screw-up, btw. Never go there.

Silly thief,
The rotors and calipers were probably worth a lot more than the wheels. Check out the pricing for used 993 wheels on eBay and you will understand why they are not the most attractive targets for theft.
Here's a request. If anyone reading this thread actually had the wheels stolen off their 993 please reply. I suspect the number of replies will be difficult to tally.
