Sunroof problem.
Hey
So my sunroof opens on the press of the button as expected but to close it you have to press the button twice, once does nothing and so you press again and it close. Motors sound normal. No groans etc.
Thoughts?

Just some thoughts:
It could be the cable crimp on the end of one of the side drive cables beginning to fail to cause the roof to twist slightly and jamb as the two sides don't move exactly in parallel. Have someone cycle the roof as you observe its movement. Any out of sync movement left to right will be readily apparent.
Rocker switch in the console could be on its way out.
Or an end of travel switch in the motor housing.
An end of travel switch may be internal to the gearbox and if present it is probably a microswitch that has old grease on it causing it to stick. I looked at the drawings and to me, it was unclear as to the presence of the switch. If present a little electric motor cleaner spray will probably resolve a stuck switch. Others may chime in here and help,
Looked at the wiring diagram and saw an electrical device option 439 called a roof catch related to the sunroof, it also is unclear as to how it functions but it may also have a switch or is the end of travel switch.
Gently open the 20-year-old zipper in the headliner and you should be able to very quickly identify any switches that are present. I would go the extra step and rub a rag with a few drops of silicone lube on the zipper before opening it reducing friction on the zipper's teeth in the hope of not damaging it when zippering.

It sounds to me more like a switch issue...
When you open the sunroof, put your fingers on it so you can feel it as it opens without adding any helping motion or pressure.
Now, when you press the close button one time, see if you can detect any slight movement in one direction or another. If you feel any movement in either direction, then you will more than likely be dealing with a misadjusted microswitch, which will require a slight adjustment, in order for the sunroof to operate normally.
Just my guess...

Issue appeared yesterday for me, opens normally...won’t close. Initially a few cycles of the close end of the switch would get it working, now it takes holding the button and giving an ever so slight pull on the roof to close.
I’ll check the switch first, thanks for the details gentlemen.

Magdaddy,
When mine was acting up, intermittent and such, I took it apart, cleaned the obviously carbonized/corroded bits, and the switch works as good as new. It is a straightforward 10 minute surgery.
