Intermittent Sunroof switch - Cleanup pics
So, i have this whacky sunroof switch that stops working at the worse times (ie during rainy day). There is no mechanical noise happening when the switch is pressed, it just doesnt seem to respond, so it was an electrical problem. Checked the fuse, it was fine. Decided to open up the sunroof switch and this is what i found. (couldnt find a photo of anyone opening up the switch, so decided to post one up)
Nasty stuff. Used a screwdriver to scrape off some of the soot from the contacts and rubbing alcohol to clean up. Applied some Lithium grease at the metal pivot points.
Hope this helps others having sunroof issues. Easy fix, works fine after. Save yourself some cash from buying a new switch. Just remember to reassemble the switch connector panel the right side up.

Thank you! I am having this exact same issue. I will attempt to "clean up" the switch myself.

Exact same thing happened to me, and I did exactly what you did, with the same results. It's nice when something on the 993 can be fixed for little investment.

So I jumped in my 993 a few Sundays ago and went to open the sunroof and nothing. I pressed the button yesterday and it works fine. I am wondering if my switch doesn't need cleaning. Thanks for the info.

My issue is that it usually won't close once i open it. but if i run the driver window switch up and down, then it will usually close. to me this isn't a dirty contact issue. it seems that the power goes thru the driver window switch and maybe there is a relay not closing? wish i had hand crank windows and a hand crank sunroof (or no sunroof). incidentally, my passenger window faults out similar to the sunroof switch.

Shoot me your regular email address in a PM and I will reply with the window/roof-related electrical diagram attached.

From Edward: Update for anyone who may have a bad sunroof switch:
I did the operation as on as per the link I had posted in #2 above. Easy peasy and the switch now works the roof flawlessly! Just be careful and take apart the switch on a clean towel as there are two very small ball bearings that serve as contacts ...you lose one and you’re hosed! That’s why a towel is a good working surface as that sucker will roll and is sooo smalll...we’ll you get it.
Thanks again for the OP of that fix-it thread! I could have bought a new one but if simply cleaning the contacts is all that’s needed then heck, it’s a good day!

You're gonna need this picture when you put it back together.

Nice ...good though of posting the pic of the contacts schem. I simply took it apart uber-slowly and noted how the contacts were situated before fully disassembling to clean. Not that it helped completely since when I put it all back together, it all worked, except that the switch actuates backward! ...doh! I really didn't feel like it was a big enough of an issue to take it all apart again, so I left the switch in there as is. Like I said, it works great, and now my brain is rewired to open/close the sunroof "properly" ...hahaha!
