Default Coming to America! UK car, US road trip.

I've been wanting to ship one of my cars out to the States and do a road trip for a few years. Finally I've committed to it, booked flights, dropped the car off at the port today and am busy planning six weeks and thousands of miles covering Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama. Some of those States are simply passing though, others I have more time in – like a week in Palm Springs halfway to recover from some of the long days behind the wheel.

I'm going to blog it for those who are interested and will share the link once on the other side of the Atlantic and have the first post in. I couldn't wait to show this photo from the port earlier – sums it up quite well!

It's done. And what an incredible way to end it up in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolinas, home of the Tail of the Dragon and so many great roads.

The 993 has been a fabulous companion across 20 States as we covered around 8,000 miles east, north, south and west. One mechanical problem that never even managed to halt our progress and an ineffective air con were our only gripes.

It has been an experience I will never forget and something will I remember fondly in my final days as some of the best money spent. I'm absolutely in love with America after this and would live there in a heartbeat.

Some of the things we have seen have been out of this world. I'd find it impossible to name a favourite place or moment. Hitting speeds I never thought my car would see en route to the Badlands, drinking at a bar Einstein sat at in a place I'd only ever heard mentioned on an Eagles track, driving the Sitgreaves Pass on Route 66, the Palms to Pines, seeing Salvation Mountain... that lot was only from the first half.

I said at start it would be a once in a lifetime event. Maybe it will, maybe it won't? I'm pretty sure given a half chance I'd take it.

Going thru a drive thru for some healthy American fast food like a delux double quarter pounder is going to be fun with the wheel on the right hand side. :-)

You do know that we drive on both the right and correct side of the road here?

Even though, to us, "petrol" prices are relatively high right now, to you, they'll seem like a bloody bargain! Enjoy the journey!

Great shot, and fantastic plan! You will see more of the US than 99% of the US population. Where is the car landing?

If you drive through southwest Montana, which you really should, then let me know and I’ll show you around.

You could have left your car in the UK...take my car around the states...then I'll take your car around the UK (and to Nurburgring)! Save us both a bunch of money...;-)
