Default techron and sai ports on a 993

will adding techron to each fill up do anything to help clean the sai ports and check engine light?

The short answer is no. It might kick the can down the road, might not. But if Techron were cure-all, everyone here would already know about.

That said, there are good hillbilly fixes to solve the problem. The one I see used that is cheapest and the best results involves a drill with a bass guitar string attached used after some strong solvent is applied and allowed to sit and run it's course.

Search the archives, there are threads about this.

Good luck

Techron won't help. SAI ports clog because the engine is burning oil. A fuel system cleaner will help injectors and carbon deposits on the backside of the intake valves but that's about it.

I use Techron on two consecutive tanks of gas a year. In theory, it should clean the injectors no real validation on this. Techron is the detergent additive used at Shell gas stations. The story goes that unlike other detergent additives it will not leave any byproducts if used in higher concentrations.
All hear-say and marketing spiel so I stand on thin ice as to its true benefits.

What makes you think your problem is SAI ports. I recently observed that slightly out of specification oxygen sensors will cause the ECU to misdiagnose the issue. Have you replaced the check valve, how many miles on your car and how old are your oxygen sensors? If you are using Durametric are you using the latest version with 993 ECU communication fixes?

Alternatives I've heard are the Lqui Moly treatments: Ventil Sauber (Valve clean) and Jetron combo. Double dose Techron is another. Probably need to change the oil after if you double dose with additives.

Motorvac type treatments are something people do for Direct injection motors. May be an option.

It's a nit but Techron is a Chevron additive (they all have their magic potions!) Shell just hasn't marketed theirs as stand alone.

^^^True statement reguarding Techron being affiliated with Chevron fuel not Shell.

The two things you can do to help PREVENT clogging of the SAI system ports, is to:

Change the SAI check valve regularly (20-25k mi) and,

DO NOT OVERFILL THE ENGINE OIL!
The lower level mark on the dipstick is plenty sufficient!

This is also a GREAT way to lower the flashpoint of your oil. In other words, make it thinner. No bueno., amigo.

Wondering where the magic 200 mi. max limit comes from?

Pour in the additives and fill the tank. Run through the tank of fuel and change the oil. Done.
