Did all 993s come with stock with chrome exhaust tips in 95? I've been looking at mine and trying to polish them up a bit, and I'm starting to doubt if they even are chrome? Were there different finishes?
I have taken standard and motorsound tips (originally chrome in this case) removed them and polished them to a high chrome finish. It generally takes a buffing wheel and red/rouge compound to do a proper job.
Mine still look like the day I did them a year ago. I do a weekly wipe with NeverDull and that's it.
Chrome? I thought all standard tips, like mine, are just stainless steel. They get dull after a year or so and I pull them off and polish them - it takes about an hour per tip. There was a thread a while back on polishing your tips. You might want to do a search.

You forgot to cover that in your "Detailing Tips & Tricks" clinic.
So when do I bring mine over for hands on instruction?
"NeverDull" - is that something else I need to buy? Hanging out w/you is getting very expensive
You need to join the HWFM team as "Master Detailer." Mike - his car shines more than our heads & having seen him at the track - he's fully qualified.
My 1997 C2 came with polished SS tips. My car did not have the motorsound option. I believe that Mike is correct that the motorsound gets you the chrome tips.
I replaced mine with chrome from Gert. You could remove yours and have them chrome plated - that would be very inexpensive. Hey, do it when the cars in WINTER storage.....
If you live in a large metro area just get' em re-chromed, should be reasonably priced, the turn around should be pretty quick....Call around get some prices and estimates on turn around. You may be pleasantly surprised. Heck....I've considered having my motor sound tips "black chromed", forget the polish, wipe 'em down <img border="0" alt="[byebye]" title="" src="graemlins/wave.gif" /> and GO! Just another $0.02
Steve's right. I had my OE tips chromed about two years ago and they still look great. The very edges are starting to get a bit "goldish" in color, but that's probably because I do nothing to them but wipe them down when I clean the car; no polish, nothing, and two years of daily driving plus track days. Cost a bout $70 if I remember correctly. Of course, I could have just bought new tips, but on my budget I felt that I could use that money on some other P-related purchase
I removed my stock SS tips and sanded and polished them. Took a while but they look good. I touch up ocasionally with "Autosol" polisher. I did the 80 grit, 120, 180, 220, 360 etc then on to polishing rouge and then the Autosol.
I posted the thread recently about the grey stove paint and that led to the black chrome idea.
I am still looking for a set of the '96+ style of tips for sale so I can play with them.

It's much quicker and more rewarding than swirl removal, Grasshopper.
Had my stock tips polished for $95. Best money I've spent on the car. And I had it done while the car was in for alignment so no crawling under the car required (although I took a look and it was only 1 clamp).
The thread is dated June '02, and they still pretty much look like the after picture. I touch them up once and while, but that's just a swipe with a rag with some polish compound. It only takes 30 seconds or so.

Give me $95. I'll take care of it.
Tom...yup, the "before" picture is about what mine look like...so I guess the answer to my original question is "no, not chrome, but you can:
A) polish them,
B) send them to get chromed,
C) send them to get black chromed,
D) look the other way."
