So the clock unit contains some technical part which controls the main battery that is used for starting the car?

Wow- that seems weird...

No, the clock contains the battery charge warning light.
This lamp is part of the generator charging circuit and needs to be present and working in order for the battery to be charged while the engine is running.
Cheers,
Tore

Interesting, will have a look at the diagram.

I was going to ask if it merely had to be present but ToreB stated it needs to also be working (I don't doubt him). Interesting potential point of failure. Sounds like I'm replacing the bulb in mine just to be safe.

If you do drive without then when you reinstall the clock most likely the air bag light will be illuminated. You will need to have that removed via OBDII.

I have a boost gauge in place of the clock. The clock is still plugged in and sits behind the gauges.

Cool. Who did this? I sent mine to Germany and was able to keep all the warning lights.

In action starts at 1:16

The current Excellence issue comprehensively describes charging and clock-related issues and lots more. Pictures of 993 gauges are shown!
