Yes, I guess I misspoke a bit.

Yes, this CAN be done. But it needs to be done by a total pro. Not a faint of heart job for the amateur. Also, the deeper the scratch, the harder it is to fix without a screw up. I looked all over for someone in Los Angeles to attempt this job on some wiper scratches on my windscreen. Found no one that would even attempt it.

You may be correct regarding the logo, I assumed it was a Porsche thing. I did feel better seeing the glass taken out of a box with a Porsche logo on it, and a 9xx... part number. Same for the rubber seals. I can't recall the exact cost, I posted it in a thread last year. I think it was about $1600 or $1700, where the knock-off glass was about 6 or 7 hundred. In my case, the replacement was 100% covered by my insurance (Leyland-West), so I wasn't concerned about the additional cost.

Safelite is the worst possible choice. They use low quality replacement glass coupled with inept technicians. I was naive and had them replace my Cayenne Turbo S windshield. They incorrectly installed a non OEM windshield that wasn't sealed correctly. When driving I could hear and feel wind coming inside the cabin. They came out a second, third and fourth time and couldn't get it right, plus they got the black windshield sealer on the Alcantara headliner which they had to pay for to have the Porsche dealer replace at a cost of $4400. Finally after 5 months, Safelite's insurance paid the dealer to install OEM glass. Lesson learned. Demand OEM and avoid Safelite.

since
you resurrected this thread from 2020, would you mind expanding on your jiffy lube suggestion?

ive never heard of anyone taking a car to jiffy lube for a new windshield let alone a
25 year old classic that requires skilled and knowledable windshield technicians.

Sadly National Auto Glass is closed I can't find anybody good to replace my windshield. Contrary to popular believe, it is somewhat difficult. I had it installed wrong (tilted too far down), and it creaked when you drove. We put the factory rope cord around and it was a little better. I took it to National, Butch pulled the whole windshield, ad re-installed without the rope and it was perfect

I have a contact in Los Angeles and was recommended to me by my Porsche Interior guy. He does work for many of the Porsche specialist bodyshops in the area. PM if you need the contact.

I am about to have my windshield replaced next week…rock on a San Diego fwy. I’m going with ARG-Quality Auto Replacement Glass, at least that’s who was recommended. Anyone with any insight on their work?

and I asked for OEM, will provide details of glass logo once installed.

I had my windshield replaced at a Porsche Center which has a Classic department. They do it in house, their technicians are used to do it.
FWIW, the brand of the new windshield is Pilkington. They had the new windshield installed on the car the day after I brought it to them. Then, have to wait for one day for the glue to dry or bond (sorry I don't know the exact technical word).
Pretty happy with the efficiency of the windshield replacement.
