Default MY02 Carrera Wheels Photos on 993 Plus weight and handling differences.

As a lot of you know, I replaced my 17" Cup wheels with the MY02 Carrera 18" wheels.

First, let me post the difference from the 17's. Hopefully this could help members considering changing their wheels.

-My number one concern was the weight. I thought that the 18's would be at least add a couple of unsprung lbs. To my surprise, as I weighed them with tires, the fronts were the same and the 18s rears are actually lighter than the 17s!!

Here are my findings(Note: my weighing scale is not lab precision calibrated, but just a regular household weight watcher's scale )

Fronts:
-7X17 Cup wheel plus 205/50 Bridgestone S-03 =41LBS
-8X18 MY02 Carrera wheel plus 225/40 Michelin Pilot Rib =41LBS

Rears:
-9X17 Cup Wheel plus 255/40 Bridgestone S-03 =46LBS
-10X18 MY02 Carrera wheel plus 265/35 Michelin Pilot Rib =44LBS

Ride(Note: Car have ROW M030 suspension):
Drove the car for 5 miles on the 17's on, then drove the same route on the 18's, I surely don't feel much difference on the bumpiness. But the cornering/turning is much much more firm and responsive.

Cool

Sorry for the poor quality. I will replace these once I get my dig camera back.

thanks

I like those, Mike.
I think it would have been useful also to note the weight of the wheels and tyres separately as (a) the tyre profiles (b) tyre manufacturers are different although as you say the overall weight is what counts.

Thanks for the kind words guys! Appreciate it. I'll post better pictures this afternoon.

Harry, yeah man that would have been better to weight them seperately, but I didn't get that chance when I came back the following day to pick them up, they'd already mounted the rubbers plus balanced them. Plus I would not have the motivation to dismount the rubbers from my Cups
Here are the advertised weight of the Cups and MY02 Carrera wheels:

Cups OEM(Not Replicas)
Fronts 7X17 Offset: 55mm, Wt: 19 lbs. 2 oz.
Rears 9X17 Offset: 55mm, Wt: 22 lbs. 5 oz

MY02 Carrera
Fronts 8x18" 19 lbs. 5 oz. 50mm
Rears 10x18" 23 lbs. 6 oz. 65mm

I think it was the higher profiled tires that added the weight on the 17s", Anyways, like you said, the total weight of them is what mattered for my objective.

Terry, I got the 18" from Brumos Porsche(NA) in Jacksonville, FL. Fronts were slightly used condition and already have Michelin Pilot Rib. The rear rims are both brand new, out of a the box, plus brand new matching rubbers. The whole deal was $2350.
Just note that there are 7X18 and 9X18 which are for the Boxster. The 8X18s and 10X18s are the ones that will have the proper fit for the 993.

Wow- that's an incredible bargain.

Those cups are really heavy wheels. I'm pretty sure that a set of GOOD 17" wheels with tires will weigh less than even your super-lightweight MY02 five-spoke wheels. I'm gradually coming to the conclusion that 17" wheels are probably just better than 18" for a number of reasons (yet I just bought another set of 18"...)

Mike, one suggestion from photography standpoint. When photographing cars (especially wheels), pets and kids, get down. Don;t shoot any of these from an adult-standing-up level. Everything will look better. I can give some examples if you'd like:

(yeah, I did take photography in college for a while).

Mike,

Your new rims look fantastic! Are you storing the 17" wheels and tires in the kitchen?

Hey Mark, How are you doing? I sold them yesterday morning to a Rennlist member from your area. He came down here and picked them up. They would have been a permanent fixture in the garage if I didn't sell them. I really would have taken your advice to use them for track, but for now I don't have the resources to be at the track a lot. Expect me to be in the sideline though

Thanks for the compliments. I'll be posting better pictures in a few.

My Fujifilm Finepix 4700 dig cam is broke(my fault), so I'm using the scanner for now. What a difference that dedicated dig camera makes. You can see on my photo album below my signature the richness in quality/resolution.
Anyways, here are some more. Still not the best as I want them.

Mike - your car looks great with the new wheels. If I may ask, what caused you to start running a front license plate?
