Post OT and Long: HWFM goes PCA Club Racing at Putman Park

Who wants to go club racing??
Well the first team meeting/Club Race for HWFM Racing (MidWest) has been logged into the history books.
The Racers:
Bill –Chicago- multiple class winner
Greg Fishman-multiple class winner
Eric in Chicago-Rookie, 1st race
Mike in Chi-Rookie, 1st (PCA) Race
Jeff Phillips-Rookie, 2nd Race
Doug Crossman-Rookie, 3rd Race

The short story, the guys that were supposed to be fast were and they won.
The long story…
Greg Fishman was seen near the Eurosport trailer, checking the “wear” on Bill's Hoosiers. What do you know, Bill has his tire deflate on him 3 laps into the sprint race. Greg takes 1st place in class (C) and overall win (Group 2)Rookie JimB in a great looking 996 takes 2nd. In a odd twist of fate, with Bill out of the race and unbeknownst to me, I move up to 3rd place!!
Finish the race and am informed that I have to visit the scales, I drive a Cab! No way I wont make weight (3064) I pull in, 34lbs light!!! I am DQ’ed, no podium and the race does not count for my rookie licsene. OK, make sure I finish the next race with 6 more gallons of fuel than I ended with and I can make weight. I can still run the “Top Gun” race. The top gun race takes the average of each driver’s times over the weekend (practice, qualifying and race) and assigns a handicap. Well being part of HWFM racing, I get the pole!!! The slowest in our run group!!! Our group is C cars and higher (993’s toGT3R Supercup and GT1/2/3 cars) Pro Driver Rick Polk is in my group driving his Grand Am GT3 car. He and has a 3 min. handicap behind me. The race starts and cars are let out on to the track behind me based on their handicap. It is a 22 lap race so if no yellow flags fly, I might have a chance… It only takes a few laps when things get ugly. GT3R ‘s whizzing by me like I am a pylon, then come the 2000 lbs 600 hp GT2/3 cars followed closely by Bill and Greg and a host of other fast guys. I am trying to count the # of times the various cars lap me. By lap 19, I am out of contention but what a blast. Having 2 of the best drivers in Club racing pass me on either side while turning into a corner doing 90+ miles an hour, inches from me and each other. They split around me doing 110 easy,brake down to 70mph and track out.It was a experience I will never forget!! (Those guys were not offered HWFM stickers or shirts). As expected Bill and Greg had quite a battle, Greg taking victory first in the sprint race with Bill taking the honors, first in class and first overall for the Top Gun race. Quite an accomplishment considering the cars in the field!
Other highlights from the sprint race. Jeff, driving his antique 74 Euro Carrera in E Class is also in group 2 with us for the sprint race, Jeff gets squeezed outside in turn 10 (not a good place to get squeezed) he is pre apex, a lift, brake or steering correction is going to send him spinning. His choices are, wall in front, swamp in back. Possessing above average skills that it takes to push his 30-year-old car around the track, Jeff opts for option 2 spinning his car into the swamp. I forgot to mention, it is pushing 85+ degrees outside and Jeff is really stuck. The drivers are getting a little warm in their nomex. The race goes full yellow and the pace car is brought out, lap after lap we snake by Jeff waiting for his car to be pulled from the muck 10 or 15 min. later (and 5lbs lighter) the race is back on!! 15 min. later as the checker flag flies I look in my rear view, Jeff is back on track and completes the race!! Jeff manages a 4 place finish in his group A top gun race after a hot battle with our newest team member Doug Crossman .
Our fearless leader Mike, could not stick around for the club race but did manage to complete the fun race and qualifying before family duties called. Given the fact Mike needs more mods for his cars, better to lose the battle and win the war!!Mike was also honored with a pole position for the Group A Top Gun Race, I am sure he would have brought home a victory if he were able to stick around. Before leaving, he did break out bumper stickers, t-shirts and the team banner; we were the hit of the paddock! Mike was even seen trying to bribe the Race Steward and Scrutiners with stickers at the driver’s dinner. Next race for the Midwest chapter of HWFM is July 4th weekend, same drivers, different track (Gingerman Raceway) Stay tuned…

Eric,
Great report on the race. Just one or two corrections. I never battled with Bill this weekend I was just too damn slow and he was really hooked up. I also finished second overall not first and that was to a lower class car with an above average driver and had two other 944's nipping on my heels. I was faster two years ago during my second race but was on Hoosiers and not the Michelins. The Michelins were consistent for me but not fast enough to even hold a candle to either of the two Bills in C.
All in all it was a great weekend and a well run event. Hope everyone puts it on their calendar for next year and we get a few more cars out there.

okay, had a write up complete w/photos and links (not photos) showed up....now I can't "overwrite" to get them.

Who can explain this process to a very "simple mind"?....

Some further amplification to Eric's scintillating report.

The weather was wonderful.

Our paddock was expansive, and right by the pre-grid, thanks to Eric and Kirsten staking out as big as space as those occupied by the major race shop's semis and motorhomes.

However said HWFMRacing paddock was full of trials and tribulations for each member, although they were balanced with equal parts of laughter.

I'm hoping Jeff will elaborate on his triumphs and tragedies. It's a great story.

The team leader did manage to earn his turtle this weekend.

After starting with very slow laptimes Friday morning, I bummed a ride with Greg Fishman in his very quick and beautifully prepared 993. He even hooked up with a 951 so I could study the waterpumper line.

Helped a lot. Next time out I was two seconds quicker. Got a total of four seconds quicker by mid-day Saturday. I was pleased with myself, and this was typical of how my race weekends usually go.

So I expected to get even faster.

Then the Turtle raised it's head.

Fun race, I was two seconds slower. Qualifying for Sunday's race even slower.

Look at the grid afterwards, I'm DFL.

How's that for setting a standard for the team.

Still my disappointment did not prevent me from enjoying the evening's pig roast and socializing with the Race Steward and Scruts. Eric, I was not bribing them, I was establishing a favorable rapport, in anticipation of future negotiations.

I did leave Saturday night, not because I DFLed my first club race qualifying, but because my granddaughter was getting baptized on Sunday.
I did take comfort in the fact that I can only improve my starting position on future grids.

Other sources report that I was third on the Top Gun grid, due to my faster times earlier in the day.

We did have the pleasure of meeting teammates Jim B, down from Minnesota in his gorgeous 996, and Jeff 96 993 in his arena red coupe who was up from Cinci for the DE.

We also welcomed new teammate Doug Crossman who was functioning as Jeff's helping hand in his mechanical challenges over the weekend. He's a great guy with a '79SC who instantly embraced the HWFM principles.

Bill E and Greg are wickedly fast, and their cars make wonderful noises as they pass slow moving vehicles. and they look very cool as they rapidly fill a rear view mirror.

Eric was very kind in not pointing out that on Friday I had a lurid slide (as Derek Bell would say) on cold tires right in front of him during a warm-up lap on Friday. But I managed to catch it, with fast hands, and a little help from my windshield wipers.

The tee shirts were indeed generating smiles wherever we went.

Wish I could have been there for the races on Sunday. Hey if Eric can get a podium, I should be able to finish mid-pack.

The banner will be flying at Gingerman. Hope a lot of you can join us.

Yes a great weekend it was.

We all had a great time making fun of ourselves and others and the weekend's DE started off with a literal BANG. My first on track damage and it occurs as I am parked in PIT LANE. Yes, having a good session, come in for some clean track and a red 911 in front of me BACKS UP into my fender! Nice bit of damage...gonna be a long weekend.

Next session, total brake failure from the newly rebuilt caliper that I just installed from Vertex. That prompted this little amusing tid bit from one of our members...

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/fixme.jpg" alt=" - " />

Oh yeah, and let's not forget this one

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/wrench.jpg" alt=" - " />

After borrowing someone's calipers (taking his off, mine off, puttiing his on my car, etc...)while I wait for my replacement to arrive, Eric, Mike, Bill, Greg and Kirsten (the lurker) are accumulating hot laps without incident but plenty of jabs about the ol' Carrera.

By mid-day Saturday, I have my caliper and my beat up little car. We are not getting along to well at this point so I decide to put some new shoes on her. Well get them all tightened up and as I lower the car the front right is flat the airvalve is not tightened...the saga continues.

I finally get a session Eric and I are having a blast trying to get around a very slow but nimble (i.e. blocking) 944. (He would make a great member on his driving ability, but we don't like him) until I try to make a move and yet another spin...oh well.

Head out for the Fun Race with no more than 10-12 laps on track. In the warm-up lap the car starts bucking like mad, I make it all the way to turn four and out she goes…dead on the ashphalt. I coast to turn 8 and watch my teammates and friends fight out the fun race.

Qualifying is next and as I sit suited up with the promise that the car will now start, it doesn’t….no qualifying time...

Not one to give up easily, I track down a coil in the paddock and pop it in…yes I now have power, but no track time left in the day.

Sunday comes and I think I am all set. Get in the car, very soft pedal...no practice. Race comes and finally all is working?!? I am pumped up and make a good move at the start for a several place move. Well not too many laps into the run and here comes a GT-5 car under me in turn 9-10…yep, Eric said it, crash or swamp. The swamp it was. Still not getting along with the car so I give it a bath.

Finally, we come to terms w/one another and I actually complete a full session AND race without incident...4th in the top gun behind the Chief HWFM Racing mechanic (if we don't have one) Doug.

Meanwhile, Eric is going fast enough to win him the Top Gun Pole Position!

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/grid1.jpg" alt=" - " />

In the ensuing Pole Position interview Eric makes his predictions...Polk and Flaska would catch him
in 9/10 laps. The actual number was 6 or 7 so he was pretty close. The pass was AMAZING! They
literally flew by at the same time one right and one left...How many of us will ever be able to say that two GT2R cars made us the meat of their
sandwich??? E did a great job w/all of those cars
out there and led the race for about 16 laps until Wild Bill Economos caught him. The announcer was having great fun with the two of them.

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/interview.jpg" alt=" - " />

Congrats to Greg and Bill for thier wins, Eric for his "first" race, Mike his forsight to bail out of the top gun race and go back home where all was safe

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/CEO.jpg" alt=" - " />

Doug for his 3rd place Top Gun finish and Kirstin for another "spin-free" weekend

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/team1.jpg" alt=" - " />

Thanks to the OVR crew and to the HWFM team for a great weekend. Like Eric, it was my first time at Putnam and my first club race. Everyone was great. Greg let me follow him for a session on Friday to learn the track. Bill and Bill were nice enough to DNF allowing me a podium in my first race. Eric was good for a few laughs as we waited to be weighed.

As for the 996, except for some massive oversteer issues in the Top Gun race, it was slow but reliable. No overheating, no massive engine failure, no important parts falling off. Just the need for more development. Both car and driver.

Thanks again. Jim

Mike,
I never got a T-shirt. If Bill in Chicago gets one I certainly must.

Jeff,
I think your middle name needs to be persistence. I think I would have turned it in for the weekend with as much bad luck as you had. Of course you had some really good luck in turn 10 when you went off. I thought your new # was going to be "13".

Jim,
For the few laps that I was trying to catch you during the Top Gun race your car was really loose (as you realized) and in turn 9 your front inside wheel was a good 6-8 inches off the ground. I had similar problems and some was cured with less compression and a bit more bump and more spring in the back.
You did great and made good improvement in your times, good job and hope to see you at Road America and/or the next Putnam race.

Eric,
I thought that the tire adjustment I made for Bill E. was our secret...

The upsides of the weekend were (in no order of importance)

Seeing everyone at the track
Getting credit for 2 races
Having Carston from OVR lend me his calipers!
The fine showing by all the HWFM team
and everyone coming home in one piece.

Of course the unveiling of the HWFM Racing Team banner was the highlight!

Almost forgot to mention that as I was picking up the 1000 tools I used last weekend, I heard my name called for some drawings...go running up to find out ifI won anything and I WON TWO HOOSIERS!

Also, the coil that I bought and installed has cleared up a low rpm issue that I have spent a year and $2,000 chasing! All in all, pretty damn good weekend.

Thumbs up

Wow what a great weekend you guys had over there! <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" /> Can't wait to meet you teamates up close and get the honours myself for the teams pole position

One question Eric... Since you got stuck running in C why the weight problem? RS cars that run in C have min weight of 2700+ something.

Jeff,
If anyone deserved those tires it was you. Guess what I won at the prior event: Helmet Bag.

Oh and I thought that your outfit was a new line of driving suits, since that was the only thing you wore most of the weekend...

Robert,
My dad was there and took a bunch of digital pics, I will get him to send them to me and I will post them.

Greg

A shocking oversight.
See the private message waiting for you.

Danny

Can't wait to see you and the other Houstonians at the Sept race. We'll have Texas-sized fun.

Jeff I was hoping you'd tell about the Hoosiers (fitting you won them in Indiana). After the day you had, you deserved them.

Danny, first thing out of my mouth is "why cant I run at RS weight??" There is nothing in the rule book about prepared weight in C so the default is 993 D class, 3064lbs. I was wearing my Red Wings cap at the dinner the night before, the scrut was from Denver... He told me with a chuckle, I was going on the scales... I should hae listened. I later asked could I turn the Cab into a RS, answer was no. No such thing as a RS Cab. No problem, one more race with a rookie X on my back is not a bad thing, I wont be fast for a while!!
Looking forward to welcoming you to our little midwest tracks this fall!!

Great pics, Jeff

If you look closely at the one of me relaxing under the EZ Up in my blue Smurf suit (as my son calls it) you'll see Eric is showing the team founder no respect.

Don't worry teammates, vengence will be mine.

Eric wants another T-shirt.

I am spending the equivalent of one of his barely legal mods to have an XL label installed in a size small shirt.

When he wears this I expect each of you to say "Gee, Eric, you putting on weight?"
