Speedo Tampering
I have been suspicious of the honesty of the PO lately (too late now that I've had the car for 10 mos.) I noticed that the speedometer looks as though it was taken out and replaced. I am wondering if there is a way to confirm that the mileage on the odometer matches the actual mileage on the car.
Thanks,
Evan

You can read the running hours of the car from the ODBII port. For example I have 60,000 miles and about 2400 hours of running time. This works out to an average speed of 25mph which implies city/highway driving.
Not sure about the mileage though. Is that kept inside the computers?
How do you know the speedo was replaced?

It looks as though it was taken out and put back in...not necessarily replaced. I am suspect because the speedo is not straight, and the rubber gasket around it does not look right either. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Maube he had it turned 45 degrees (so that the rev line is on top of the gauge)? And then the owner turned it back before he sold it (just didn;t do good job).

If service records, maintenance stamps, and carfax are in order, and there seems to be no abnormal wear for your mileage, I would not worry about it. As stated, for whatever reason, the speedo may have been removed.

Let me start off by saying that the speedo gasket has looked different from the other gauge gaskets since about 1990. Strange 'eh?
I had a 1991, speedo gasket looked different. I have a 1995... It looks different. My pals '89 C4 speedo gasket looked different too, as well as his '97 TT speedo gasket. So... No worries.
Now, as for wondering & worrying... Why?
You liked the car enough when you bought it, does this tidbit ruin it for you now?
You know, mileage is not a big deal on a Porsche. In fact, mileage on any car means little compared to 20 years ago. These Porsche engines are good for 2-3 HUNDRED THOUSAND miles. High mileage should just not concern anyone, but I know many still are stuck in the 1970's.
What I am trying to say as I fumble about the keyboard is: You loved the car enough to buy it, so just keep loving it. If the records are close, then live your life & enjoy!
BTW... Do you know how EZ it is to move the speedo? If you clean the dash really well you can darn near move a gauge's in these cars!
Geezzz, quit worrying & live man live!!!
