Question Creative Solutions to Rollbar Subwoofer Conflict

I will be installing a DAS Sport roll bar in my 993 and would like to retain some sort of subwoofer capability in the rear but, I would like to be able to remove this while at the track.
The rollbar is, of course, very limiting as to what I can easily install/remove. ( I presently have a huge 2 10" subwoofer enclosure where the seat bottoms would normally be but, that must come out to accomodate bar and to reduce weight.)

Has anyone tackled this to their satisfaction?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Ted

PS Yes, I know, a track oriented car with a subwoofer is a little wacky <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

You have to remove the seatbacks for the DAS rollbar installation, so those subwoofer enclosures wouldn't have the flat seatback to rest on. Assuming your 993 is a coupe, you could use floor-mounted enclosures.

I have a 10" subwoofer and a DAS bar. I went to a lot of trouble to make a molded box to fit in the passenger footwell of my '88, and ended up putting in behind the passenger seat to gain space. The 993 came along, and I had big plans to make a nice molded unit to fit in the well behind the passenger footwell. That was 2 yrs ago. I've since moved it to the rear passenger seat, and threw a small dark blanket over it. After I put the DAS in, I still put it in the same place. You really can't tell its there with the black interior.

The best thing I can tell you, from my experience is that its nice to be able to take the thing out. A 10" enclosure won't fit behind the seats in the footwell--not enough air space. I'm afraid that even a nicely done custom mount on top of the rear seats will look awkward, just b/c of the air space needed for the enclosure.

Kevin:

Good thread...thanks! Unfortunatley, judging from the photo, I am guessing that this enclosure would not fit in/out between the roll bar bars.

I have seen "tube" style subwoofers advertised. Maybe I could just squeeze one of those into the floor space behind one of the front seats. These look small enough to fit past the bars and maybe the seat would wedge it into place (do not need a projectile). Any body tried this or know how these sound?

Thanks :-)

Ted,

A far cry from your twin 10" subs, but you might like to take a look at the Panasonic EAB-12132J subwoofer, fits very neatly behind the driver's seat, virtually invisible if you put a piece of black felt over it, easy to install especially if your head unit has an ISO connector, fairly cheap at around £150 fitted and easily removed and refitted (1 connector). I find it a very worthwhile improvement.

Look at this alternative. Custom made, occupies one back seat. Don't know does it suitable w rollar.

You'd have to notch out the back corners of the enclosure for the bar's attachment points at the seatback hinge/bolt holes.

I recently had a 10" JL Audio sub w/enclosure built to fit in the rear seat of my C4 cab (sub fires downward). Since I have a DAS rollbar I wanted a removable box for DE days. The installer found a pretty good matching carpet and notched the box to fit tightly around the rollbar. Probably not the prettiest method but I really don't notice it at all. (But what a great improvement to my sound.) I removed the seat but I can reinstall very easily to get everything back to original.

Here's a pic.

Thumbs up

Steve:

I like your approach. I could have a local stereo installer build a custom small enclosure after I install the bar. They can be certain to design it for easy install/removal when the bar is in place and I will have no risk of not fitting in/out.

Thanks.

Ted
