Chips?
Is there a concensus on chips for non-turbo 993? I see Autothority chips available fairly inexpensively. Are there any other chips out there worth considering? Is Authothority OK, any known issues?
What I'm looking for is not a performance boost per say. In my E30 the chip allowed the car to start breething above 4K RPM and it was not just noticeable, to me it made the car bearable (and made me wind it to the new redline pretty much on every upshift for a while :-) ).
So, what are the effects of Autothority chips, other chips? Oh, the car is and will remain a street-only '95 Cab.
TIA! Mike.S

Thanks, Rick!
It seems to me that he caters much more to higher performance and race cars than street cars, judging by the site.
This is a purely street car. I have other toys that I race.

Since your car is a '95 I strongly recommend Steve's chip. My '95 is a street/autox car and his chip made a big difference. I've switched back and forth between the stock chip and Steve's and the difference is very noticeable. I had an Autothority before Steve's and while it was close there was still a difference. One of the main things I had against the Autothority was the raising of the rev limter. I don't need the extra 400 rpm and it just shortens the engine life. Steve's chip doesn't advance the rev limiter.
If there's one shortcoming in Steve's chip is that it causes the Drive Block light in the clock to flash. I removed the bulb and it's no longer a nuisance.

Back, thanks for the info!
I actually don't mind the rev limiter bump, as in a street car the shift points are controlled by me (I don't have time to look at the tack in an autocross car, so I know what you mean).
Could you describe the benefots of Autothority and Steve's chips over stock? I think I can get Autothority chip for $100, which is tempting.

Mike, I think you'll find after talking to Steve that you can get a chip that should produce some preformance benefit that's fine for a street car. Steve works with GIAC to get the map you need for your car and the 'options' you want.
I have a chip from Steve for my daily driver (and former DE car) that takes into consideration our crappy CA gas, my LWF, the standard rev limiter, and that I have the drive block system. I showed an improvement from the stock chip with G-Tech testing (should be able to find it with a search). The chip does not cure all the issues associated with the LWF, but adjustment of the ISV did. My drive block and locking system work fine with no idiot lights to bug me.

Hi Mike:
FWIW,.....
1) You really do not want your engine to exceed 6750 RPM on purpose or accidently. The consequences will truly hurt your bank balance.
2) We have several variations of chip files; most are for local pump fuel and stock internals and some are for race gas and upgraded rod bolts, valve springs and retainers.
There is a lot at stake with engine management software and I'd kindly suggest that you do not use price as the main criteria of which one you choose.
I hope this helps,

Check ot this web site (www.andial.com) on the FAQ page,
Question #2. Andial is Porsche Factory Racing USA and is
THE performance knowledge source. For those that seem
to forget, "There's no free ride in life", especially for those
problematic early 993s and later OBDII ones.
Good Luck

Loren...what do you mean when you say "especially for those problematic early 993's..."? I have a 1995 OBI...it is chipped and I have had no problems other than the wiring harness (which wasn't a problem, just had one that met the replacement requirement). They are pretty problem free as far as I know.

I guess you haven't read about the valve guide problems. Those last air
cooled engines were basically pushed to the max, and as such they don't
need to run closer to the "edge". Heat loss was one of the key factors for
going to the water cooled 996, i.e. more energy out = more energy in minus
more heat loss. Just drive and enjoy the car for what it is;
1. great looking
2. super performance as stock
3. nice features
Have Fun

Not to sound ignorant, but what is the Drive Block System? I have this sticker on the small window of the drivers door on my 98 993 cab and thought it was something to do with the alarm system.
