Post Lurker in the bushes - lurking for 993

Been shopping/looking for a new fun toy. 10 years removed from my last 82 SC. I miss it! Thought hard about 88-90 Carrera, looked at 964's, thought about 90-94 928, 540-6spd, etc. etc. Then I started checking out Rennlist . What a great group. Even thought 996, but am convinced the 993 is the way to go. Been dealing on (2) cars, will certainly go through PPI as I did on my last purchase. Just wanted to pass on my appreciation while lurking for the great insight. I am working on one Ocean Blue 95 in Norcal with 48k miles, and a Polar Silver in Atlanta from E-bay with 32k miles. I have patience on my side, and no real immediacy, and am confident I will find the right car. Thanks again for the help, and I will send in my membership in short order following my lurking .

Ocean Blue is a GORGEOUS color, and one I seldom see. I considered one when I was on the hunt, but they wouldn't move on the price. Silver's nice, but this O blue, and the Midnight as well, is special, IMHO.

Oh, BTW, welcome!

Chaz-
I went for it on the Polar Silver @$34k. I tried to get in touch with the guy on the Ocean Blue, but he didn't want to deal below $42k (apparently changed his mind because it is now on Rennlist at $39 and change down from $43k. It looks like a nice car.

But let me share with you my new 993 story. Had the PPI done at International Performance. Struts front and rear for hood and bonnet need to be replaced, front bumper re-painted, but not due to crash, and done correctly, small crack in tailight lens, and minor curb rash on both rear wheels. No dings, dents, or scratches. Minor concern was a squeak in the clutch lever and slight stiffness. Not an immediate candidate, but with clutches, it is hard to know. IP made me feel confident the car is not in imminent danger of needing a clutch, and suggested I just drive it. My shop quoted $2k for the full on clutch job, and I attempted to negotiate with the Seller, but at the end of the day, he has a standing offer from a local for $34,500, so he won't move. At the end of the day, the car appears to be as advertised. I asked Kerry at IP how he would rate the car 1-10. He stated 8+, and that he has never seen a 10. He states the interior is impecabble, and one of the nicest he has seen. I agree with you, at $34k, it was a reasonable buy, and as I have also learned here, dropping $1500-2500 to make it totally correct is not uncommon. I want to put the Sport Classics on it, and the only thing needing to be done right away is a $1000 30k service at Kahler's Werkstatt in Dublin. I really vacillated about buying a car from across the country, but I will be the 3rd owner on a 32,000 low mileage 993 that spent its first 5 years in Costa Mesa. I am really starting to get excited, and am experiencing the same anticipation Peter must have had with his recent purchase!
Intercities is picking the car up early next week and I should see it within the next couple of weeks.
I gotta give a shout out to all of the great info and posts on Rennlist that helped me get the conviction to pull the trigger. My buddy just bought a 99 Boxster with 24,000 miles.....no comparison My dad is convinced the 996 is the way to go, but I really like the way the 993 looks, and the 996's seem to really be falling on price. Plus, I want the visceral sound I remember from my old 82. Can't hardly wait!

One thing struck me as odd. If the seller has a local offer for $34.5K why would he be negotiating with you for a long distance sale at $34K. It may be nothing but little flags like this should raise an eyebrow at the very least.

Excellent point. The reason is because we have a deal, and a big part of any type of transaction like this is good faith. His message was, "I won't move on the price I sold it to you, as the PPI I requested merely confirmed how he represented the car." I spoke with the Seller the day before the auction ended and stated I would bid to win the car, but would want a PPI performed. We talked over the phone, he answered all of my questions, and in the end, I think it is because we established the relationship that he ended the auction 30 minutes early and took my high bid at the time. Apparently, he got several irate phone calls following this because people were pissed he ended it early. His feeling was probably based on my legitimacy as a Buyer. Regardless, I have been on the end of an E-bay auction that got ended early and it upset me too! (on a 928). I have no doubt the activity was there on this car, and I have no reason to question the Seller's credibility. Ultimately, he is standing by the deal we made, and the car appears to be as advertised; We shall see.

Hey there, congratulations on the purchase. I take it your in the bay area. I just recently purchased a '95 993 in Walnut Creek (31k, Adventurine Green) and am living in Burlingame. Got a great deal as well as this seems to prices have really been dropping. Took it to my mechanic and he just smiled...seems he bought a '95 about 1 1/2 years ago (similar mileage) for about $10k more! Perhaps I'll see you on the road. Happy driving.

Congrats! You have excellent taste in color (Polar Silver - sweeeeeeeeet!). Interior color? Upgrades? You might be getting an email from Bruce Anderson soon for his market report! I got one from him 3 weeks ago after I bought my 96 C4S. He said it would be in the next issue of Excellence. Too bad I won't get my first issue for a couple of months as I JUST subscribed.

At $34k, you stole that thing. Is it a 95 or 96? I couldn't disern from your post, or I'm getting old and didn't read it right. Man these cars are dropping like a rock.

Please post pics when you get it!

Thumbs up

Congrats workitjr, looks like a pretty good deal!! Mine also needed a few minor thigs to put it right, front pads, cut rotors on front, and as you a new marker light lense and front hood shocks. I'm pretty sure that a 95 coupe in pretty decent condition are still selling for about 32k - 38k. I know you could probably pick up the sport classics for about 2500.00 if you look around.

Pretty soon this board will have you about 1-1/2" lower and a set of RSR muffs. Then it will be aluminum shifter and handbrake, then it will be this, then it will be that.

Anyway, I really hope you enjoy the car. And hang tight, I know what waiting for the delivery truck feels like. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Thanks all - definitely looking forward to a Coastal cruise with the Norcal Brethren once I get it here and dialed in. I can certainly see the capacity to get hooked on adding goodies! The only thing I am convinced on immediately is the need for a nice set of wheels to update the car and contemporize it. It is a 95 by the way Steve. Built 11/94, grey leather interior. I was traveling for a few days, and as I got home to the Oakland Airport late last night, a guy blew by me in a beautiful 96, Polar silver, with Kinesis wheels. Funny how you start noticing them everywhere once you are 'in tune'. I am blocking the weekend of arrival to just hang out in the garage, drink beer, detail it out, and putter about.....
