Default My AC died on my 97 - where to start?

Fan blows fine, max and regular.

No cooling.

Any simple paces to trouble shoot.

Car's a 97 - so I assume old type freon if that's the problem.

I'll follow this thread. The A/C on my '95 wasn't working when I got it.

Do 'The Search' on this site.... There is tons of info and how to articles.

I was able to do the whole A/C System rebuild from what I found. The main item that went bad was the evaporator. This had a bad leak and is located inside the air box right behind the fuel tank, PITA to do, but cheaper than having a Stealer do the work.

Again, search
Good Luck!

There's probably a leak in the A/C system, evaporator problems are sadly common in the 993. Cooling media is R134a, which is also used in modern systems.
You might have a problem with one or more of the flap servos. A mixer servo could be stuck in the open position, letting heated air from the engine overshadow any A/C cooling. See here for a DIY test procedure.
Cheers,
Tore

The A/C condenser shuts off automatically when the freon is too low. Take the car to your local indy and have them do a quick re-charge. make sure to measure what it's holding now, and what it has after the full charge. That will give you a base line to track what;s happening - it may be a slow and inconsequential leak.

Also do the recharge with a dye. This allows leaks to be spotted easily

I 've had leaks from sill pipes (twice) and eventually the evaporator. Pump seized once. Full replacement system early this year. New condenser, fan resistor, pump, evaporator, valve, drier and both blower fans. Pipes replaced last year with new mounts and a generous dollop of dielectric grease on the rubbers.
All done by self with help from a friend and much searching for best prices. Pump is an identical Toyota Denso unit, I had to swap the pulley, clutch and connector block but it was 1/4 price of Porsche. Evap Kuehl, condenser Hella (but beware some are made too big).

Go to your local Walmart and buy a recharge kit. If it solves the problem you are done. This is what I did several years ago and my AC is still running strong.
If it doesn't work you will need to look a bit deeper or enlist the help with a tech who knows HVAC. Don't assume you need something expensive like a new condenser.
