Post 98 993 - Locking Differential and ABD

Are these options "necessary" or "worth paying for" and can they be added after-market?

Nice to have, not got to have. I think you can get a Quaife aftermarket unit. I have the Porsche ABD/LSD option, and felt/saw it working once. Had it not worked, I think I may have been in the ditch.

Neither is necessary, but the ABD and limited slip diff are worth having. The ABD works as an electronic limited slip below 40mph, but I've hardly ever seen the ABD light come on. I have a C4S, and these came standard. Both can be added after-market.

Ok, I am going to show my utter lack of technological knowledge here but....(big breath)

Can you have a LSD with a tiptronic transmission ? Or is there something about the tiptronic that makes a LSD unecessary ?

Good question!

Indeed, you CAN use an LSD with a Tip. They are very worthwhile, IMHO; especially the ZF clutch types.....

They definitely aid traction, and in the case of the clutch-type ones, handling.

Now I see further commentary about the fact the the Locking Differential appears to be a high maintenance option - is that your experience?

My 993 does not have ABD, and I haven't missed it yet, even on the track. I'm sure under fairly heavy throttle at low (under 44) speeds in the wet it would be nice to have, but I don't push any car very hard in the rain. With all that weight over the rear wheels, my car has never lacked traction.
