Default Please help: Gear shift **** won't go down

Does anyone have any tips on how to get the gear shift **** to seat all the way down? Mine sits really high. I've leaned and pushed on it all I can, but it won't go down any further. Is a rubber mallet in order? Other tricks?

Spray some silicone lubricant in the **** hole and slide it on. It will be tight but will eventually set. I wouldn't use a hammer as you are putting stress on the shifter linkage.

That does seem to sit a little high. Have you removed the shifter? Flip it over to see if anything is blocking it from sitting lower.
No mallet!

That's what I was thinking. Glad I didn't go there!

Thanks.

I know. It drives me nuts.

Nothing is blocking the shifter. It's just really tight. I'm going to get the KY!

It's been a while since I've had mine off, but I seem to remember there are 2 different type *****. One will not seat as low as the other. I replaced my leather with the carbon fiber, and it does not seat as low as the leather.

Any set screws or circlips on the **** itself that are blocking it?

Quite frankly, I don't see approaching the problem from the rear is going to help things any! JMHO...

In all seriousness, if lubricant isn't the answer, try using a (rat tail) edit, tapered square file (since the hole is actually rectangular in shape) of the appropriate size to slightly bevel/taper the leading edge and then reapply the KY.
