Power Steering rack over haul - anything else?
I need to overhaul the power steering rack, while the rack is removed is there anything else worth replacing while we have the access? Bushes etc?
Thanks

This procedure is only done once or in rare cases twice in the life of the vehicle and a leaky rack from sealing problems on a DIY job will involve a lot of hours of reinstall work. For this reason, I would not do the actual rebuilding of the rack as a DIY effort unless you have experience from doing it before. Most of the labor is in the taking out and putting back in. I would send it out to a rebuilder and ask that they use your rack as a core and not do an exchange from their inventory. Your rack as freshly pulled from service will not have the corrosion issues of one made from a salvage core. If you do send it out make note of your rack's serial number.
You can reference what parts and supplies you will need to reinstall your rebuilt rack in the attached document.

I'd do the rack bushings and tie-rods while you are in there. You will need to disconnect the tie-rods and do an alignment anyway, so you may as well get new parts in. Also, do the front end ball joints, they are right there and also require an alignment if you were to do them separately. While you are doing that, you should replace bushings in your front control arms. Done with that... how are your rear-end ball joints and bushings looking? Slippery slope indeed

Why gross up the cost of the job by several hundred dollars by unnecessarily causing the need for an alignment or on unrelated items that probably are not needed?
- The rack bushings should be replaced. If your tie rods have no play in them they are good to go. If the tie rod end boots look cracked they can be easily replaced with new boots, I got nice silicone ones from a Summit Racing supply house for a few bucks.
- No - if you disconnect the inner or even remove the entire tie rod assembly without disturbing the inner to outer rod connection your alignment will be preserved.
- Ball joints can be inspected for play, again an unrelated task and not necessarily needed.
- Unrelated tasks worthy of inspection first.

I still would recommend doing this additional work to tighten up the front end, but you are right that an alignment wouldn't be needed for the rack alone.
Upon rereading, I apologize for my statements that may seem a little harsh, the original poster did leave the topic wide open with the "anything else" phrase.
