Default Brake pads for DE's....

I was shopping for some Pagid Oranges for my 993 today and almost had a heart attack when I saw that the fronts cost 293 dollars. I knew Pagid's were expensive because I put them on my Boxster and liked them, but jeez. What pads do you guys use for DE's without either destroying rotors or your wallet?

I just switched to the orange's and they made a HUGE difference. No fade at all. Since I just switched, I don't know how long the rotors will last. My friend just sold his 964 and gave me his spare rotors which helps.

Speaking of brakes, I just posted this thread on trail braking in the DE/Race forum. Any comments are appretiated.

Check out Hawk Pads also. I use the Blue pads on my race car and another (HPS?) for my street car. Much cheaper than Pagid's. I get them from Paul Weston (advertises in Pano, Excelence) or from Wheel Source in Dayton OH.

There are a lot of options for pads depending on your driving level. When your just starting out, stock pads will be more than enough. As you progress, you'll probably want something like a Porterfield R4S, Metal Master, or other intermediate pads. When you get to really aggressive pads, you have Padid, Hawk, Porterfield R4 compound. As you go up in quality of pad, they do get more expensive, but the pads get a lot better.

I like the Oranges but thought they were expensive, too. After talking with other racers and reading posts by Greg, I've since switched over to Hawk Blues and have been very happy with their performance and price. There also seems to be less dust than with the Pagids.

the Pagid's seem to be the popular brand with p-cars but I have gone with Carbotech's panter plus pads & have never looked back!! Great bite, long life & resonable brake dust!

TrackJunke,

I'll play devil's advocate here. Of all the things that you might save money on, brake pads may not be the place to do it. Trying to save a few pennies, I used a set of off-brand dedicated track pads ("KPF", if I remember correctly). They promptly disintegrated on me after one day of use at Road America. I was doing 150 mph heading into turn 5 when the fronts let go.

I now use Pagid Blacks, and they are well worth the money. Stop much better than the Oranges, at least in the relatively heavy, fast TT. IMHO, stock pads are OK the first few times to the track, but you'll feel much more secure, and have more fun, with dedicated track pads.

I wouldn't skimp on tires, either.

TrackJunke,

Performance Friction's pads are superb! I use the PFC Compund 97 fronts and rears for TimeTrials and they are outstanding, IMHO. I have never used Pagids but, like you, I didn't want to fork over that much dough. I asked around, tried the PFCs, and am sold! I've had no fade and they feel very linear and have good feedback. My biggest problem was getting used to not over-slowing the car (though I'm sure I still do). I've run them for maybe 10 events so far and haven't noticed any wear on the rotors beyond the norm. I got mine from OG Racing...good price, great service. Hope this helps

Edward

I agree w/ Edward. I've heard some pretty good things about Performance Friction, too. Also, Porterfield's are much cheaper than Pagids and perform nearly as well.

How about some heresy here...my last event at Sears Point I used stock Big Red pads based on advice from Rennlister DJ. I had no problems with fade...etc. I was going to Pagid Orange but didn't want to put new pads on my somewhat worn rotors.

Is this the ticket? I can't say for certain, but those stock pads worked just fine, and they are inexpensive.

When I install the new rotors, I will have to decide to stick with stock or go to another pad.

Listen to Martin here, the stock pads (Porsche OE) are more than good for DE's. If DJ could use them without them disintegrating, anyone can. Besides, brakes are a lot like suspension, discs and pads are designed together. Once you deviate from the original setup, you may never get the brakes to work as well.

between late 02...and all of 03 I did about 12 track days. I used stock pads with no problems.
So I'm with Viken on this......"if DJ could use them without them disintergrating, anyone can."

Default Double Heresy

Well, I have mentioned this a number of times but will do it again. I instruct and I race so I have put these to the test so to speak. My favorite Race pads are the Pagid yellow(sometimes Black) Enduro compound. I will use Pagid Orange as my second favorite. My favorite DE pad for Instructing is....AutoZone stock pads with the...get this...Lifetime warranty!!! They lasted fine for me each DE weekend and I maintained 2 sets so I could swap out the set that was toast after a couple of weekends. The really outrageous thing is the price..something like 57 for the fronts and 38 for the rears...lol. I used the sets for the big reds but they also make sets for the narrow body cars. Used them for years.

DJ doesn't use his brakes, at all. He just pitches the cars sideways to scrub speed. He is a great example....for future WRC drivers.
