Buy the flywheel and clutch from Gert and have Fisher motorsports in Barrington or Midwest Eurosports in Bensenville do the installation

Do people with the light weight flywheel installed in their 993s note any problems with regards to stalling when depressing the clutch?

I had heard stories that the flywheel may not have been compatible with the ECU feeding fuel to the engine....and when the flywheel spooled down (is that the word for it?) too quickly, there was insufficient fuel fed to the engine that would occassionally cause the engine to stall.

This was a problem that I had heard of from the 964 forum when people installed the lightened flywheel of the 964 RS in their standard 964s, and required a chip reprogram.

Is this the same for the 993?

Only problem with stalling is in pre 96 cars from what I understand. Andial and others have a fix for the early 993's by attaching weights to the back of the flywheel. I have a 96 and have had no problems with this upgrade. A search of the Archives will yeild similar stories.

Thumbs up

RE: LWF

I recenly made this upgrade while my transmission was out for repair (and upgrades). I have a '97 C4S. There is absolutley NO STALLING PROBLEM on my car. You can take off from a stopped position with very very little throttle, and not stall the engine. On a hill, you need to give a bit more throttle than before. When releasing the clutch in neutral, the engine drops to idle and runs smoothly, actually smoother than before. Downshifts are almost telepathic as very little throttle is need to speed up the engine for a lower gear.

The only downside that I have noticed is a very slight gear rattle while very slowly traveling in 1rst or 2nd gear, or trying to pull slowly from below 2000 rpm in 2nd. I would say my results have been 99% + and 1% -.

Order your kit from Gert. I E-mailed him on a Monday (late Monday his time) and had the parts in my possession Friday afternoon. My dealer can't order a hat in that amount of time.

PS If you want to regear your box, I'll pass you on to the fellow who did mine. Porsche Motorsport "Clubsport Ratios" in 3-6. You won't believe the difference!

Fred,
The "rattle" you refer to is a vintage Porsche sound. It belongs to the "+" side for me, bringing my "+"s up to 100% for the LWF.

I went for the factory RS clubsport flywheel and clutch as the the old dual mass flywheel was knackered. The clubsport package was actually cheaper than replacing the stock item.

Took a bit of time to get used to it as you tend to ride the clutch a bit to get moving quickly, but the clubsport clutch is up for the job. Slow take offs can still be achieved using no accelerator at all. As for stalling, it has stalled a couple of times during engine deceleration with no load, but the engine had new piston rings too. If it persists i will get it checked out.

Regards

Phil...

Hi Ross,
Good to hear from you. I have to get the clutch first, then see if there is anything left in the budget for the RSR mufflers. Can't wait to see you guys in May. Bring your life-jackets, the jet-ski will be ready by then. Say Hi to Luc and Paul.

Cheers,
Sachin
