Performance Upgrade?
Short of putting a supercharger in my 96 993, what is a good performance upgrade?
I've heard of ECU re-programs, how much and how difficult?

I agree with David in terms of the most "seat of the pants" performance improvement but, you're looking at $7-9k for those mods.
For that kind of money you could leave your car alone and buy an nice 1000cc sportbike that'll go 0-100 in 5 seconds and top out at 170mph +! Or, you could buy a used 944 race car ($7900 in the PCA-GGR newsletter), or a trip to BOTH the Russell and Barber racing schools, or...
Every now and then I need a dose of perspective...

nothing wrong at all with the supercharger option...but the 993's immediate shortcoming is not the lack of power or torque...it's the (relatively) soft suspension and the crappy gearbox that came with NA cars (you guys on that side of the pond are luckier). basically these mods (along with the RS flywheel/clutch) are reversing what the factory did to compromise the 993 for the street (ie, comfort, fuel economy, drivetrain noise, etc. )
I've thought about the TPC or TechArt supercharger myself but then you presumably start to deal with reliability issues...plus you wind up with a faster car, but not necessarily a better performing car. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

yeah....after getting blasted for asking about a 3.8litre upgrade, i came tot eh same conclusion.
weight and gearing are the simple ways to make the car flat out faster without hurting engine reliability long term.
unsprung weight as well as rotational inertial weight; gearing, that's an easy one.
in a recent test of 2 tuner cars (same car, different philosophies), which car was faster? the one with the supercharger or the one with the higher redline but naturally aspirated? in a flat-out run, the car able to take advantage of gearing longer.....was faster, although it had a 50-75hp deficit. this was done on rustangs in car and driver or motortrend, comparing a roush to a saleen or seomthing like that.
gearing can do a lot. both bearbox and the rear-end.

I have a tip, so don't have the luxury of gear ratio choices, flywheel lightening etc.
FYI, a good series of articles on performance enhancements appearas here:

In particular, the article on flywheel lightening is a goo read, as is the rolling road stuff.

Since you have a C2 I THINK can swap your R&P gears. Not sure what are the available options though, I assume they will not be as extensive as for a 6 speed. (I had asked about one for my 6 speed about 18 mos ago but decided if I was going to modify drivetrain I would start with the gearbox first).

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Since I need a new clutch anyway, I think I'll start with the RS Clutch & lightweight flywheel.
The dealer quoted me $2,500 for parts alone. Does that sound right? Is there somewhere else I can pick these up for a bit less?

since you're in there already you may also want to think about getting an LSD (Quaife, Guards, etc)... should be about $1100-1500 and makes a big difference if you are planning on autocrossing.
my $0.02
btw, I wish my clutch would wear out so I can more easily justify why I HAVE to do these mods

am waiting for clutch failure to get the LTW, too.
wish it would hurry itself up, unfortunately, one has to drive like a complete clown to grind through am almost new clutch....

You won't find any better bang for your buck than track time via a good track school or PCA DE's.
I've cut much more time off my laps via good instruction and lots of seat time than the 3.8/LFW/sway bars...and whatever upgrades. Many people upgrade their cars without being able to appoach the car's limits.
